History

The International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA) was established in 1985 as a joint program of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies and the University Libraries at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech). The purpose of the program is to document the history of women's involvement in architecture by collecting, preserving, storing, and making available to researchers the professional papers of women architects, landscape architects, designers, architectural historians and critics, and urban planners, and the records of women's architectural organizations, from around the world. The IAWA collects this information to fill serious gaps in the availability of primary research materials for architectural, women's, and social history research.

Scope and Content

The records consist of IAWA Board of Advisors minutes, clippings files, correspondence, by-laws, and other papers associated with the archive. The materials were donated by the founder, Milka T. Bliznakov (1927- ), who served as chair of the board of advisors from 1985 to 1994, and the archivist, Laura Katz Smith, who tended to the collection from 1987 to 1999.

Provenance

The materials were donated to the IAWA in 1998 and 1999 by Dr. Bliznakov and Ms. Smith. The records were organized in March 1999 by Gina Ellis, student assistant, and Laura Katz Smith, Manuscripts Curator, Special Collections Department.
