Mitzi Vernon, who was standing in for Donna Dunay, Chair, called the meeting to order at 11:00 AM. The agenda was approved as follows: Old Business - 1. Review of Minutes from February Meeting; 2. IAWA Brochure, final draft; 3. New Contributions; 4. Proper channels for receiving contributions; 5. Newsletter; 6. Milka Prize; 7. Annual Meeting; 8. Other. New Business - 1. April meeting led by Jeannette Bowker. (see Addendum 1)

  1. Minutes: Professor Feuerstein presented the minutes from February, 1999. Professor Marshall-Baker moved to approve the minutes, Professor Bowker seconded the motion and the Minutes were approved unanimously.

  2. Brochure: Professor Bliznakov and Ms Beam reviewed the final draft of the IAWA Brochure, which incorporates final corrections and changes received from most of the Board members. Professors Marshall-Baker and Vernon noted the predominance of images of buildings and an absence of images related to interiors or industrial design. They agreed to locate an interior or industrial design image for the brochure. The Archive will scan the image and Ms Beam will replace it in the brochure.

Professor Bliznakov discussed the cost of the brochure, recalling that Charles Steger promised to pay for the brochure. She reported that the present design, which will require the use of envelopes, increases the cost from $12.00 to $80.00. The Committee agreed that the present design should be maintained.

  3. Contributions: Professor Marshall-Baker announced that the IAWA received $260.00 in the last month. This was the most that the Archive has ever received following the publication of the Newsletter. All of the contributions came back with the reply card, which, for the first time, had been inserted into the Newsletter.

  4. Channels for Contributions: Professor Bliznakov noted that she received a financial contribution from a member of the board. She emphasized that all contributors, members and past members should follow the proper channels when making financial contributions. This should be reiterated in the Newsletter.

Professor Bliznakov reported that she spoke to Dean Knox regarding an endowed position for IAWA Director. Dean Knox stated that an endowment of one-million dollars is required for a full-time position and a half time position reduces the teaching faculty. There was general discussion regarding potential "high profile" donors to create an endowment for this position, although no conclusions were reached.

Professor Bliznakov also expressed concern that the current position of Manuscripts Curator will be dismantled: either not be replaced or that the duties of the position will be divided among the library staff and work-study students. She noted that this could, potentially, cause disruption and irreparable damage to both present and to future collections.

  5. Newsletter: Professor Feuerstein reviewed the current status of the next newsletter. Articles have been received from Professor Bliznakov (Recent Acquisitions from Bulgaria and News from our Board Members), Ms Horton (Collecting New Archives and News from our Board Members), Ms Katz Smith (IAWA Archival Donations and use statistics), Ms Kubo (International News). Professor Lang-Jacobs (recent Acquisitions from Switzerland) will be sending her article by the end of the month, Professors McMillan (honoring Laura Katz Smith's role as first IAWA 2 March 1999 minutes manuscripts curator), Vernon (ID) and Marshall-Baker (Interiors) are working on their contributions and will submit them as soon as possible. The Newsletter will be finalized in April.

  6. Milka Prize: Professor Marshall-Baker asked about the current publicity plans for the prize which was to be promoted this Spring for the first stage entries due at the Fall Annual Meeting. The announcement for the prize was planned as part of the spring awards ceremony. Possible venues for publicity were discussed including the IAWA Newsletter and Website, CAUS News, ACSA Newsletter, AIA publications and announcements in professional trade journals. Professor Feuerstein suggested that the committee give Sandy Boughton information for a press release and a list of sources.

The content of the press release was further discussed eliciting a number of questions from Professors Feuerstein and Vernon about the particulars of award itself and how the first year should be handled. The committee agreed that it needed to study the prize organization and content before the next meeting and finalize it at that meeting. We will then publicize it through our own contacts and to architecture schools in Virginia.

  7. Annual Meeting: Professor Feuerstein suggested the weekend of September 25th. This date was tentatively agreed upon by all but Professor Vernon, who may be out of town. Professor Marshall-Baker tabled the decision until next meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
  1. Professor Bowker, who will be leading April's meeting, suggested that we meet on April 12 (Monday) at 4:30 rather than Tuesday April 13. All agreed to the change.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:15.
Respectfully submitted by Marcia F. Feuerstein, Secretary
5 April 1999
