Invited guests: Milka T. Bliznakov, Elsie Beam

Call to Order:

Jeanette E. Bowker, who was standing in for Donna Dunay, Chair, called the meeting to order at 4:30 PM.

Agenda Items:

The agenda was approved as follows: Old Business - 1. Review of Minutes from March Meeting, 2. Newsletter; 3. Manuscripts Curator Replacement; 4. Annual Meeting; 5. Milka Prize. New Business - 1. May meeting led by Marcia Feuerstein; 2. Other announcements.

Old Business:

  1. Minutes: Professor Feuerstein presented the minutes from March 1999. Professor Marshall-Baker moved to approve the minutes, Professor Bowker seconded the motion and the Minutes were approved unanimously.
  2. Newsletter: Marcia Feuerstein reported that the first draft of the Newsletter would be ready for initial formatting by the Dean's Office by Monday 19 April. Once that is complete, she will edit the articles for clarity. Professor Vernon stated that the ID student assistant might be available for graphic work. Professor Bliznakov offered to help with the initial layout. She commented that Professor Dunay should add a short message, similar to her comments within the 1998 issue. Missing articles by Professors Marshall-Baker and McMillan will be included in the next issue.
  3. Manuscript Curator Replacement: Professor Feuerstein opened up the discussion by describing a message and question that she received from Janet Carlton, from Special Collections. Professor Feuerstein explained that Ms Carlton was assigned to some of the Manuscripts Curator's tasks but was unfamiliar with the IAWA and the library's responsibilities. Professor Feuerstein (who is unfamiliar with Laura's position) suggested to Ms Carlton that she speak to Gail McMillan. She also sent Ms Carlton a copy of the IAWA By-laws, which include the library's responsibilities to the IAWA. Ms Beam commented that students working in Special Collections are most familiar with the IAWA.
  4. Professor Bliznakov relayed the meeting Donna Dunay and she attended with Dean Hitchingham, Dean of Libraries. At that meeting, Dean Hitchingham reassured Professors Dunay and Bliznakov of her commitment to the IAWA, although at this time the library is rethinking the positions within Special Collections. The position may be assigned to a junior person who will "grow". Some duties may be divided. She also believed that it might take time to find an appropriate replacement.

Professor Bliznakov distributed copies of correspondence from Prof. Rosaria Piomelli, Ms Inge Horton, Prof. Lemco van Ginkel, and Ms Gottlieb, which were written to Dean Hitchingham, each expressing their concern about the future of the IAWA. Professor Vernon suggested that Dean Hitchingham be invited to the next Board meeting to clarify her position. The board members all agreed to this suggestion and Professor Feuerstein offered to contact the Dean.

Professor Bliznakov noted that the IAWA director must send Laura a letter of appreciation. The Board agreed and Professor Feuerstein offered to contact Prof. Dunay about the letter.

  5. Annual Meeting: The Executive Board scheduled the meeting for the weekend of September 18th and 19th. Professor Bliznakov commented that Professor Dunay would contact the full Board regarding the meeting.
  6. Milka Prize: Professor Vernon asked about the purpose of the prize. Professor Marshall-Baker answered that the purpose was to publicize and stimulate activity. She plans to rewrite the description for the Board's final input by April 20th. Professor Feuerstein will forward the announcement to Sandy Boughton with a list of venues. The Board agreed to the following dates for the prize: First stage (proposals) due Monday September 13, 1999. Second stage (completed projects) due Monday April 3, 2000, Award announced at the CAUS Award Ceremony.

New Business:

  1. Professor Feuerstein, will lead the next meeting, tentatively scheduled for Monday 3 May, 4:30 in the Architecture conference room
  2. Professor Bliznakov announced a visitor, Professor Barbara Schmidt-Kirchberg, who will be lecturing and researching within the Archive. She will arrive on Thursday 22 of April.
  3. Professor Feuerstein announced that Anne Tyng contributed a one photograph as well as copies of drawings and photographs of her work, which were exhibited during her visit to Virginia Tech.

Professor Vernon moved to adjourn the meeting, Professor Feuerstein seconded the motion and the meeting was adjourned at 6:00 PM

Respectfully submitted by Marcia F. Feuerstein, Secretary
