IAWA Board of Advisors Working Meeting

January 23, 2002
Mitzi Vernon Home

Present: Terry Clements, Donna Dunay, Marcia Feuerstein, Gail McMillan and Humberto Rodriguez-Camilloni, Mitzi Vernon.

Visitor: Milka Bliznakov

Absent: Brian Katen

Call to Order:

Chair Marcia Feuerstein, called the meeting to order at 5:00 p.m.

Chair Feuerstein noted that the minutes had been approved electronically (our first).

Report from the Treasurer:

Professor Rodriguez-Camilloni made his last treasurer's report. Chair Feuerstein presented Professor Terry Clements to the Executive Board as the new Treasurer and welcomed her to the Board.

Chair Feuerstein reported that we received a donation from Kristine Fallon, an alumna from Chicago. Professor Rodriguez reported that we received a donation from Ms. Kriss Raupach, AIA in early January.

Professor Dunay suggested reporting the general location of donors in order that local Board members in the area might make future contact.

Report on Nominations:

Professor Vernon had nothing to report about the nominations. Pat Williams resigned her post, and Professor Vernon will send out a call for nominations to the complete Board for candidates for the upcoming new or vacant positions on the Board. Chair Feuerstein will send information to Professor Vernon about the status of current positions. Joan Wood, Despina Stratigakos and Professor Vernon make up the nominations committee.

Newsletter

Chair Feuerstein reminded us that we have co-editors, Kay Edge and Heather Ball. She requested that we forward suggestions for the newsletter to Professor Ball. The schedule and outline for the newsletter are attached to these minutes.

Chair Feuerstein emphasized that the outline is suggestive and does not necessarily indicate a commitment to the individual items.

A suggestion was made that the newsletter could discuss what we would like to fund and what we would like to add to the archive.

Professor Rodriguez-Camilloni suggested that we approach graduating women from the College for donation of their future papers. He mentioned that Robin Jackson, CAUS Director of Alumni Relations, is offering to approach alumni on our behalf.

Milka Bliznakov Prize

Professor Dunay will take Professor Rodriguez-Camilloni's place on the Bliznakov Prize Committee. Despina Stratigakos and Wenche Findal join Professor Dunay on this committee. Professor Rodriguez-Camilloni turned over the materials to Professor Dunay, which include the current proposals. There are six semi-finalists, and they have been notified. Stage Two is due September 1, 2002.

All money continues to go into the endowment, and prize funds are taken from that fund. Professor Bliznakov suggested that we consider offering a second prize when warranted.

Meeting Schedules

Chair Feuerstein suggested a mid-March meeting followed by a May and mid-June meeting.

Nominations should be in just prior to the March meeting. Ballots then will go out just after the March meeting and be returned by mid-April. The new elections will be reported at the May meeting, and new members will be able to attend the annual meeting. The March meeting is scheduled for the 13th at the home of Milka Bliznakov.

Professor Dunay suggested that we have a meeting in the Archive and bring an interested student. The meeting is set for Monday, April 15th at 10:30 A.M. Professor McMillan will send out a brief on the collection that she will display for the meeting.

The May meeting is set for Thursday, May 2nd at 10 A.M., and the location will be announced later.

Other Business

Chair Feuerstein reminded the Board that we are preparing an exhibit for the 20th anniversary of IAWA. There was no progress to report at this time.

Professor McMillan reported that the Library has interviewed one candidate (of 16 applicants) who holds a PhD. in history. She further stated that this is an outstanding candidate. The search process continues and is subject to the University budget deliberations.

Professor Bliznakov reported that Donna Kirk, a former student, who now works for the National Gallery of Art (NGA) contacted her to request that the IAWA submit materials for an exhibit at the Gallery for women's month in March. Kirk said that there is no wall space, only space in library vitrines. (Kirk's contact information: 202-842-6981 d_kirk@nga.gov.) Suggestions were made to include the following items in the submission to the exhibit: newsletters, IAWA logo, posters, and bookmarks. Professors Dunay, Bliznakov, and McMillan will make the final decisions about what to send to NGA.

Professor McMillan reported on the new collections added since the last Annual Board meeting. A list of the collections is included with these minutes. These are not online yet. The biographical entries are the result of an inventory done by Blanche Lemco van Ginkel in Canada.

Chair Feuerstein requested a motion for adjournment. Professor Rodriguez-Camilloni motioned and Professor Vernon seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 6:07 P.M.

Professor Mitzi Vernon respectfully submits these minutes.
