Call to Order:

Chair Marcia Feuerstein called the meeting to order at 3:15 P.M. Chair Feuerstein noted that the minutes had been approved electronically.

Chair Feuerstein welcomed guests, Heather Ball, Laura de Castro, Kay Edge, Jennifer Gunter, and Catherine O'Brion.

Chair Feuerstein asked for a motion to approve the agenda. Professor Clements so moved and Professor Katen seconded. The motion was approved unanimously.

Report from the Treasurer:

Professor Terry Clements reported that we have a consolidated amount of $26,903.77 in the endowment. $2338.88 is the realized endowment. The unrealized endowment or market value is $786.37. There is $846.82 in our operating account. $2809.30 was the budget for the year. Our available balance is $876.82 (68% used). The latest donation was made by Maria Letizia Conforto of Rome.

Newsletter

Professor Edge asked about what our next steps should be in processing the newsletter printing. Chair Feuerstein and Professor Dunay explained the procedures. Chair Feuerstein reported that in the College, we have changed the policy to ask permission of donors to use their name. The list of donors normally published in the Newsletter has been revised this year. All donors were thanked for their past support (without any mention of money). In the future, donors are asked permission to publish their names or appear as 'anonymous' in our list of donors.

Professor Ball passed around a rough draft of the newsletter for review. Marcia requested that we have a few copies to review later for corrections and additions. There was a discussion about setting a record for the protocol of the newsletter tradition. Donna, Marcia and Milka will put together a document of styles for the newsletter to given to the ladies handling the newsletter.

Archivist Report

Jennifer Gunter has been Coordinator of Special Collections since October. She reported that April 1, Catherine O'Brion took the position of Curator of Manuscripts. She has a Ph.D from the University of Virginia in history. Laura de Castro, IAWA GTA, has been using 5 hours of her assistantship to help in the collections. She has been organizing the Beverly Willis collection. The IAWA received a new collection by Anna Sokolina. Laura and Dawn have been going through materials to select pieces for the 25th anniversary exhibit.

Susan Conway, a graduate student in architecture, continues to work on processing IAWA collections beyond making inventories. She is involved in intellectually arranging the collection.

Jennifer will copy letters to Professor Bliznakov on material donations to the archive.

Bliznakov Prize

Professor Dunay reported that she received inquiries via email about the upcoming new Prize, and she referred them to the web site. It was well publicized. It is in the ACSA newsletter and in FACETS alumni newsletter, which Sarah Newbill edited. It was mailed to all CAUS alumni. We will post a poster announcement in Cowgill in the fall.

We discussed how we might request re-submissions. Clements reminded us that there was a letter that went out requesting re-submissions with the announcement.

Professor Bliznakov suggested that announcements should go out to landscape publications. Professor Clements mentioned that we should announce at UC Berkeley symposium of gender in landscape in Nov 2002. Materials can go to that. The landscape architecture quarterly publication-CELA Forum (similar to the ACSA newsletter) is the only LAR publication. Dunay asked Terry to give the names of Landscape Architecture publications to Sarah Newbill.

Professor Katen asked if the notices go to e-sites. Chair Feuerstein replied "yes, ACSA and others." Milka asked that Brian take materials to the VA landscape organization. Milka gave a list of landscape graduates (alumni) to Brian to send out info to them about the IAWA.

Annual Meeting

Chair Feuerstein noted that she has been getting messages from people who would like to attend, but it depends on financial support. Susanna Torre will not be able to come; she will be in Puerto Rica. I have not heard whether Rosario will come. Wrenn will be able to come. Lucinda Kaukas will be coming. Stratigakos, Schaad, Horton, will be coming. There has been no word from Joan Wood. Milka mentioned that Joan Wood had said that she would be coming and would bring her drawings for the archive.

Advisors from India, Norway, S. Africa and Pakistan will require some financial help.

2005 Exhibit

Chair Feuerstein reported that she, Dawn Bushnaq, and Laura de Castro have been working on the boards. We did not receive money for the grant application for new diversity program initiatives. We will be applying for other grants.

Dawn graduated in May but she has continued to work on the exhibit boards.

Chair Feuerstein called for a motion to present Dawn Bushnaq with a gift and letter of recognition to Dawn Bushnaq. Professor Clements so moved. Professor Vernon seconded the motion. The motion was unanimously passed. Professor Bliznakov suggested a gift of the book, School Treasures by an architect in Boston, Doris Cole. Board members will pay personally for this. We will settle in August. Professor Clements will buy the book. Ms. Bushnaq will also receive dinner certificate and a printed certificate of gratitude.

Other Business

Marcia noted that FACETS and the REFLECTIVE PRACTITIONER both had IAWA announcements in it including the Bliznakov prize. RP had an interview done with Marcia about Torre.

Next meeting will be in the first week of September, Tuesday afternoon, Sept 3 at 4:00 in Arch conference room.

Professor Bliznakov announced that Abbye Gorin is coming on October 24 to bring her written work for the archive. Professor Bliznakov has sent the archive an article about a Cuban architect who works in Miami. Kay mentioned that she met a Cuban architect referred by Joe Scarpaci. She will cultivate that relationship and she will send materials to the archive.

Professor Clements suggested that all of the material that Professor Bliznakov receives should go to the Chair as well (if a donation relationship is developing between Professor Bliznakov and someone). This would create a second correspondence file. Professor Bliznakov mentioned that she sent a box of letters, to the archive when she retired.

Professor Vernon suggested that we have a protocol discussion at the annual meeting. Professor Clements said that we should talk with Professor McMillan at the September meeting before the annual meeting. Chair Feuerstein suggested talking to the Dean about the protocol (library dean).

Chair Feuerstein called for a motion for adjournment. Professor Dunay so moved and Professor Vernon seconded the motion. The meeting was adjourned at 4:40 P.M.

Professor Mitzi Vernon respectfully submits these minutes.
