Discussion: Review of Mission Statement and Supporting Budget
Despina Stratigakos noted that she had trouble in Germany getting women to donate their papers to the archive. She has been working this past year on how to deal with this problem. She suggested we raise money to bring researchers in or for the 20th anniversary. We need a targeted fundraising campaign. We should approach potential sponsors with a very specific goal. Terry Clements noted that it might be helpful first to discuss where money is being used. She further stated that the collection is not free-it costs the library and the College. There are dollars needed for preservation and facilities.
Joan Wood: When I talk to people about donating their archives, it is not a priority for them, and donating their money is not a priority. How do you convince people?
Despina Stratigakos: Lets figure out what our priorities are and then figure out how to fund them.
There was agreement among the Advisors present that building collections is the number one priority.
Rosario Piomelli further noted that the By-Laws indicate this as priority.
Despina Stratigakos brought an NEH Challenge grant to share with the Advisors. Gail McMillan noted that the NEH provides money for preservation and access. This would help us deal with what we already have.
Donna Dunay: Our Dean has a list, and we need to get on the list [funding priorities].
Inge Horton: I am going to D.C. next week to approach the Building Museum. We need to find people to fundraise.
Despina Stratigakos: There are things we can do. The Iowa Women's Archive has had success in raising money. I talked with them about their methods and approaching specific alumni with specific goals for funding.
Gail McMillan: The problem we have is that the University has its structure for pursuing alumni for fundraising.
Terry Clements: I went to a fundraising meeting at the Landscape Association meeting last week. Alumni is one place but there are other places such as professional organizations…this avoids having to deal with the University structure.
Milka Bliznakov: I have constructed a list of existing alumni.
Terry Clements: I will volunteer to go talk to Lindsay Davenport about contacting alumni.
Inge Horton: I make a proposal that we do a targeted fundraising campaign for the 20th Anniversary Exhibition and International conference. And I am opposed to asking people to pay for donating their archives.
Donna Dunay: Can we establish a timeline for this since we are 3 years away?
Mitzi Vernon proposed that we attempt to follow a model similar to WEPAN (Women in Engineering Programs and Advocate's Network), which involved sponsored meals and events by corporations for the annual meeting. She further seconded Inge's proposal regarding the emphasis on the 20th Anniversary suggesting that we pursue our collection and funding goals through that venue.
Milka Bliznakov: I second Mitzi Vernon's proposal. Publicize the exhibit as a national exhibit.
Terry Clements: We have to have a package to send out discussing the needs for this project.
Donna Dunay: We need a timeline for this.
Gail McMillan suggested we start an IAWA listserv now to let it grow for the exhibition. She agreed to set that up.
Joan Wood asked if we could pursue international grants and funding sources.

Milka Bliznakov: I have met with Anna Sokolina. She has no status to go to Russia to solicit work. She is an architect in New York and has a Guggenheim grant for studying Russian paintings in American collections. She immigrated to the U.S. She gave a lecture on contemporary architecture in Russia. I propose that the Board make Anna an honorary advisor so that she will have status to collect in Russia. A motion will be brought to the meeting on Sunday.
Donna Dunay: We should put on the elections notice a call for honorary nominees as well.
The working meeting adjourned at 5:50 p.m.
