October 29, 2003

Present: Donna Dunay, Kay Edge, Marcia Feuerstein, Anna Sokolina, Mitzi Vernon.

Absent: Terry Clements, Eileen Hitchingham, Paul Knox, Frank Weiner.

Guests: Milka Bliznakov, Jennifer Meehan, Humberto Rodriguez

Chair Marcia Feuerstein called the meeting to order at 4:00 PM. Chair Feuerstein asked for a motion to approve the agenda (attached with these minutes). Professor Dunay so moved and Professor Edge seconded. The motion was approved unanimously. Chair Feuerstein introduced the new manuscript archivist, Jennifer Meehan, and other guests, including Anna Sokolina, IAWA Honorary Advisor.

Chair Feuerstein noted that Ms. Sokolina will be giving a lecture tomorrow, October 30 in Cowgill Hall 100, entitled, "Visions of National Perspective in Contemporary Russian Architecture."

Archivist's Report

Jennifer Meehan noted that she had started the preliminary processing of the Pederson collection. A graduate student has been hired to process this work. Another student is processing the work of the Zelma Wilson collection, and it is almost complete. Gail McMillan will deliver a talk on the Aspires project at the Regionalism in the Humanities conference in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Honorary Advisor Report

Anna Sokolina delivered her report on the role of Russian Women in Architecture. She mentioned there are many outstanding women in architecture. Women account for more than half of the Russian architecture profession. A package of work is being collected to send to the IAWA. Since the present day architects utilize electronic formats, Sokolina suggested to (the architects) that they collect preliminary drawings by hand and writing and also send the electronic formats. The Union of Moscow Architects is assembling a set of books also to be sent to the IAWA. She finds that women architects are not accustomed to preserving their work or giving it away. She hopes that her activities will be productive in bringing new materials to the Archive. A discussion followed regarding the forms for a request. Russian women question how the work can be transported.

She asked, "I just published a book in Russia. I have 380 color illustrations. Would they be interesting to the Archive...transparencies? Professor Bliznakov said that she will donate the book to the Archive and further suggested that Sokolina hold onto the transparencies until the English edition of the book is published. Professor Rodriguez suggested that maybe, because of the size of the panels, they would be ideal for an exhibition.

Newsletter

No report, but Professor Edge noted to Anna Sokolina that she will give her more copies of the newsletter to take with her. Chair Feuerstein noted that the library does not print out labels anymore from the mailing list; the print shop does this now.

Milka Bliznakov Prize

We are in our 3rd and 4th cycles of the Prize, and have completed the third prize for the award. Professor Dunay noted that the committee looked 4th cycle proposals. She briefly reported on the projects discussed at the annual meeting. The committee made a decision on 2 commendations this year. Regarding the 4th cycle, we are proposing that 6 out of six move forward to the second stage of the 4th cycle prize.

Schedule of Meetings

We agreed to have one more meeting before the end of fall term-Wed, November 19th at 4:00. Professor Bliznakov suggested that the annual meeting be moved to October in 2004 to accommodate the European Advisors with other meeting conflicts.

Chair Feuerstein called the end of the meeting at 5:15 PM. Professor Vernon moved, and Professor Edge seconded. These minutes are respectfully submitted by Mitzi Vernon.
