The town, seen in this late nineteenth-century photograph, supported a number of hotels in this period, mostly to house and feed the students at the college. One of the principal hotels, seen in the enlarged detail of the same photo, began as a tavern at the corner of Jackson and Main streets. It was enlarged to three stories for use as a hotel by George Keister and survived for many years.
