Introduction:

Lois Gottlieb (nee Davidson) is a residential designer in San Francisco, California. She was born on November 13, 1926, in San Francisco and attended Stanford University from 1944 to 1947, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree, and Harvard Graduate School of Design from 1949 to 1950. She served as an apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright in 1948 to 1949, as a part of a Taliesin Fellowship. She has designed residences in California, Washington State, Idaho, and Virginia and is the author of Environment and Design in Housing, published by Macmillan in 1965.

Scope and Content:

The Lois Gottlieb papers consist of project files, architectural drawings, correspondence, and newspaper clippings that chronicle her life and career, with the majority of the papers dating from the 1970s and 1980s. The collection also includes illustrations and photographs for her 1965 book Environment and Design in Housing.

Provenance:

The Lois Gottlieb papers were donated in April 1997 by Ms. Gottlieb to the International Archive of Women in Architecture. The papers were processed from May to August 1997 by Brad Shearer, student assistant, and Laura Katz Smith, Manuscripts Curator, Special Collections Department.
