                         COMMISSION ON FACULTY AFFAIRS

                               November 18, 1988

 

  The Meeting convened in the Newman Library Board Room at 1:31 P.M.

 

  Present:  P. Scanlon, F. Baumgartner, H. Doswald, D. Farkas, B. Grossman,

  J. McAlister, J. Perry, C. Polan, R. Wokutch, A. Woodson-Robinson

 

  Absent:  J. White

 

 

  I.  AGENDA:  The agenda was adopted.

 

  II. MINUTES:  The minutes of the meeting of November 4, 1988 were approved.

 

  III. OLD BUSINESS:

 

      A.  Commission on Research Resolution 1987-88A calling for the creation

          of an Academy of Research Excellence was returned to the floor for

          discussion.  There was limited support for a new academy without a

          clearly defined need or role.  It was agreed that a member of the

          Commission on Research would be asked to attend the next meeting of

          the CFA to present the case for the proposal.

 

      B.  J. Perry reported that the Ad Hoc Committees on the Evaluation of

          Teaching and Extension be making their reports by the end of the

          year.

 

  IV. NEW BUSINESS:

 

          R. Purdy and R. Benoit representing the Academy of Teaching

          Excellence presented a proposal that an award for excellence in

          advising be created, which would include a sum of money and be

          presented at Founders Day.  After discussion it was agreed that the

          proposal would be returned to the Academy for final rewriting.

 

  The meeting was adjourned at 3:05 P.M.
