Minutes COMMISSION ON FACULTY AFFAIRS November 3, 1989 The meeting was convened in the Newman Library Board Room at 2:06 P.M. PRESENT: L.A. Eng, F. Baumgartner, E. Fred Carlisle, D.A. DeWolf, H. Doswald, J. Duke, J. Hasselman, J. McAlister, C. Polan ABSENT: H. Kriz, R. Sorensen, A. Woodson-Robinson I. AGENDA The agenda was adopted. II. MINUTES The minutes of the meeting of October 20, 1989, were approved. III. P&T EVALUATION Professor D. Conn led a discussion of a system adopted by the Harvard Medical School for promotion and tenure in which only a limited number of a candidate's publications are assessed for quality rather than quantity. D. DeWolf presented the results of a poll that he conducted in two departments of the College of Engineering. It was agreed to provide members of the Commission with copies of the responses and return to the topic at a later meeting. IV. TEACHING EVALUATIONS The Commission endorsed the report of the University Ad Hoc Committee on the Evaluation of Teaching and requested that the Provost's office move to implement its recommendations. V. RESOLUTION 88-89C - PRIOR SERVICE AND PROBATIONARY PERIOD Discussion of the revisions of this resolution was deferred to the next meeting. VI. CHANGE OF STATION A problem of a faculty member's involuntary change of station was brought to the Commission. It was agreed to determine how often this has occurred before pursuing the matter further. VII. EMPLOYEE BENEFITS COMMITTEE The role of the Employee Benefits Committee and its relationship to the Commission was discussed. It was agreed to invite the chair of the Committee to attend a meeting of the Commission. VIII. STUDENT PERCEPTIONS OF FACULTY C. J. Duke raised the issue of what are the proper expectations of the students in respect to the members of the faculty and the extent to which students are aware of the various responsibilites of the faculty outside of the classroom. The Commission members were asked to suggest ways of informing students on these matters. IX. The meeting was adjourned at 3:40 P.M. Respectfully submitted, Fred Baumgartner
