Minutes COMMISSION ON FACULTY AFFAIRS April 20, 1990 The meeting was convened in the Newman Library Board Room at 1:30 P.M. PRESENT: L.A. Eng, D.A. de Wolf, H.M. Kriz, J.D. McAlister, J. Wolfe for E.F. Carlisle. Guests: Phil Sheldon, P. Orcutt, J. Hillison. ABSENT: H. Doswald, R. Sorensen, F. Baumgartner, C. Polan, J. Duke, B. Kuster, A. Woodson-Robinson. I. AGENDA The question of future meetings and a petition for a waiver of the policy on advanced study was added to the agenda. The modified agenda was adopted. II. MINUTES The minutes of the April 6, 1990 meeting were approved. II. ANNOUNCEMENTS J. Wolfe noted that some of the recommendations for changes in the Faculty Handbook contained in the Report of the Committee on the Evaluation of Faculty Effort in Extension and Service will be coming to CFA for consideration in the future. III. WAIVER OF POLICY ON ADVANCED STUDY The Commission on Faculty Affairs will recommend to the Provost that Mary Ann Novascone of the Department of Human Nutrition and Foods be granted a waiver from the advanced study policy in the Faculty Handbook. This policy states that faculty members with the rank of assistant professor or above shall not become candidates for a degree nor be awarded a degree at this institution. A waiver of this policy may be granted to the Provost upon recommendation by CFA. IV. EFFECTS OF ELIMINATION OF MANDATORY FACULTY RETIREMENT Phil Sheldon (Institutional Research) led discussions on some of the issues raised by the elimination of mandatory faculty retirement. Most of the discussion focussed on possible consequences to the university. Faculty and their department heads should be better informed about the retirement options that exist. More retirement options may need to be developed to increase flexibility for faculty with diverse needs and their departments. V. FUTURE MEETINGS No regular meetings are scheduled until the next academic year. Until that time, meetings may be called as the need arises. VI. The meeting was adjourned at 2:30 PM. Respectfully submitted, Ludeman A. Eng
