                     COMMISSION ON FACULTY AFFAIRS

 

                            January 19, 1990

 

  The meeting was convened in the Newman Library Board Room at 2:00 P.M.

 

  PRESENT: L. A. Eng, F. Baumgartner, D. De Wolf, H. Doswald, H. Kriz,

           D. McAlister, J. Perry for E.F. Carlisle, C. Polan, R. Sorensen

 

 

  ABSENT:  J. Duke, J. Hasselman, A. Woodson-Robinson

 

 

  I.  AGENDA

      The agenda was adopted after correcting the year.

 

 

  II. MINUTES

      The minutes of the meeting of January 5, 1990 were approved with

      minor corrections.

 

 

  III.MEETING TIME

      Meetings this semester will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm on

      the first and third Friday of each month with the following

      exceptions:

           Friday, 2/2/90, 1:30 pm due to room scheduling conflict

           Friday, 2/16/90, no meeting due to conflict with University

                     P & T Committee meeting

 

 

  IV. PUBLICATION LIST FOR PROMOTION AND TENURE

      After extended discussion, the Commission does not recommend that

      a limit be placed on the number of publications which can be

      submitted for consideration during a promotion or tenure review.

      There are several reasons, some of which are:

 

      o    It is unnecessary for tenure review of younger faculty who

           usually have fewer publications.

 

      o    It is inappropriate for review of promotion to Professor as

           it may not represent the full breadth of a faculty member's

           activity.

 

      o    The P & T procedures are constantly improving in terms of

           attention to the quality of publications and in terms of the

           scrutiny given to publications.

 

      o    It would not measurably contribute to a solution of the

           collection management problems facing libraries.

 

      o    It would not contribute to a reduction in journal

           proliferation, which is driven by many factors.

 

 

   V. PROPOSED CHANGES IN MEMBERSHIP OF COMMISSION ON FACULTY AFFAIRS

      The Commission feels that the Provost and Senior Vice-President

      should continute to be a designated member of the Commission on

      Faculty Affairs.

 

   VI.     The meeting was adjourned at 3:10 pm.
