Commission on Faculty Affairs Minutes April 9, 1993 Present: D. de Wolf, F. Carlisle, S. Crumwell (for J. Buffer), C. McDaniels, S. Ritchey, N. Shumsky, W. Williams Visitors: P. Hyer, E. Stout The meeting was called to order at 1:15 by David de Wolf, the chair of the committee. Announcements: D. de Wolf informed the Commission about actions of University Council with reference to previous actions of the Commission. Agenda: the agenda was adopted. Minutes: the minutes of March 26 were read and approved. Old Business: 1.) The Commission unanimously approved the resolution relating to the procedures for promoting and continuing the contracts of library fac- ulty above the rank of assistant professor. It also moved to waive the first reading at University Council. 2.) E. Stout discussed grievance procedures for research faculty. The major differences between these procedures and those for regular faculty and administrative/professional faculty exist because research faculty are generally here for a short time and are being funded by external grants and agencies. Therefore, grievances need to be settled very quickly so that efficiency and productivity are not adversely affected. The policy was approved with two amendments; the termination of research faculty is not a grievable action, and any action being considered in accor- dance with the policy on misconduct in research is also not grievable. New Business: P. Hyer raised the question of the family leave policy which needs to be revised because of the new federal law and the need of the univer- sity to be in compliance with it. The Commission asked her to report back in two weeks about what needs to be done to comply and how expedi- tiously that can be done. Adjournment: there being no further business, the Commission adjourned at 2:00. Respectfully submitted, Neil L. Shumsky Secretary
