MINUTES VPI&SU COMMISSION ON GRADUATE STUDIES 2 NOVEMBER 1988, 4:00 P.M. PRESIDENT'S BOARD ROOM, BURRUSS HALL Present: Drs. Bates, Bleier, Brown, Cranford, Flowers, Hills (for R. Johnson), Hooper, J. Johnson, M. Johnson, LaBerge, Moynihan, Snoke, Sponenberg, Stout, Teekell, Weber Visitors: Mr. John Ashby, Spectrum 1. ANNOUNCEMENTS - Dean R. Teekell announced the Grad Fair will be held on November 8 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Fifty-nine school have registered to recruit post- bacalaureate students. The plans for the Roanoke Graduate Center are progressing. Cunningham Dissertation Year Fellowship announcements have been circu- lated across campus and the deadline for the submission of the depart- mental nominees is January 16, 1989. Dean Teekell asked that nominations or voluntary responses to the VTIP committee be submitted to the Provost's office. New office and telephone numbers for the Graduate School will be in ef- fect at the end of November. Many students have inquired as to the status of the Defense Only Regis- tration proposal. The resolution was submitted to University Council and will be considered on November 7, 1988. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF OCTOBER 19, 1988 - The minutes were approved as submitted with one revision. 3. GRADUATE STUDENT ASSEMBLY - No report was submitted. 4. TEXTBOOK APPROVAL - "Feldspar Mineralogy", submitted by Paul H. Ribbe, was approved as submitted. 5. REPORT FROM COURSE AND PROGRAM CRITERIA COMMITTEE - Dr. Janet Johnson submitted the report on new and revised courses that had been approved by this committee. The report was approved as submitted. 6. OTHER BUSINESS - Dr. Arthur Snoke requested clarification regarding the policy on continuous and full-time enrollment for summer sessions. Both policy concerns were discussed by the Commission members and will be agenda items for future meetings with guest speakers to answer questions 7.
