MINUTES VPI&SU COMMISSION ON GRADUATE STUDIES 19 OCTOBER 1988, 4:00 P.M. PRESIDENT'S BOARD ROOM, BURRUSS HALL Present: Drs. Bates, Burger, Campbell, Cranford, Eaton, Hooper J. Johnson, M. Johnson, LaBerge, Lee (for Sponenberg) Mahan, Moynihan, Snoke, Stout, Swiger, Teekell, Weber Visitors: Mr. John Ashby, Spectrum Keith Wilkins 1. ANNOUNCEMENTS - Dean R. Teekell announced that the Graduate Research Symposium was underway and urged all members to attend the evening talk by Dr. James I. Robertson. Drs. James Gumnick and Larry Blair representing Oak Ridge Associated Universities will be on campus October 20th and 21st. Drs. Gumnick and Blair will present a seminar on ORAU programs to faculty on October 20 and will hold individual meetings with faculty on October 21, 1988 to discuss research opportunities. The Grad Fair will be on November 14. Fifty-two schools have regis- tered to attend to recruit students for post baccalaureate study. The Provost's office is asking for nominees from the Commission for membership on the Virginia Tech Intellectual Properties committee. Nominations should be submitted to the Provost's office. A committee has been established to review the contents of the Graduate Catalog. Janet Johnson will chair this committee and James Burger, Wanda Dean, John Eaton and Bernie Curtis will serve as members. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF OCTOBER 5, 1988 - The minutes were approved as submitted. 3. GRADUATE STUDENT ASSEMBLY - No report was submitted. 4. REPORT FROM COURSE AND PROGRAM CRITERIA COMMITTEE - Dr. John Eaton submitted the report on new and revised courses that had been approved by this committee. The report was approved as submitted. 5. PROPOSAL FOR DEFENSE-ONLY REGISTRATION - Dr. Arthur Snoke presented this proposal for discussion. The resolution was approved as submit- ted. 6. POLICY MEMORANDUM 14 REVISED INTERPRETATION OF IMPLEMENTATION - Dr. John Eaton submitted the report to Commission members for discussion. It was noted that a section regarding the monitoring of a student's progress toward a degree was not specifically mentioned in part of the guidelines and a section on monitoring was added to the report.
