MINUTES VPI&SU COMMISSION ON GRADUATE STUDIES 5 OCTOBER 1988, 4:00 P.M. PRESIDENT'S BOARD ROOM, BURRUSS HALL Present: Drs. Bates, Brown, Burger, Campbell, Cranford, Dodl (for Weber) Eaton, Hooper, J. Johnson, Mahan, Morgan (for R. Johnson), Snoke, Sponenberg, Stout, Teekell. Visitors: Mr. John Ashby, Spectrum 1. ANNOUNCEMENTS - Dean R. Teekell discussed the memorandum from Joyce Williams-Greene on the school policies regarding class registration for summer sessions. Information was distributed regarding on-campus census data. The Graduate School will present a report to the Academic Affairs com- mittee of the Board of Visitors on October 17, 1988. The establishment of the Graduate Education Center in Roanoke will be announced on October 7, 1988. The graduate offerings will be in coop- eration with UVA and Radford University. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 7 AND 21, 1988 - The minutes were ap- proved as submitted. 3. GRADUATE STUDENT ASSEMBLY - no report was submitted. 4. REPORT FROM COURSE AND PROGRAM CRITERIA COMMITTEE - Dr. John Eaton submitted the report on new and revised courses that had been approved by this committee. The report was approved as submitted. 5. DISCUSSION OF CUS GUIDELINES FOR REVIEW OF COURSE PROPOSALS - After ex- tensive discussion by the Commission membership it was decided that Drs. Hooper and Teekell will take the issues of concern to the Provost's office for his review. Membership asked that a statement be produced to take to the Provost and that Item 2 of the Course Proposal Form be moved to the bottom of the list and the words "if any" should be added. Members of the Commission were also concerned about rigorous enforcement of the 2/3 rule. This issue will be a future agenda item. 6. PROPOSAL FOR DEFENSE-ONLY REGISTRATION - Dr. Arthur Snoke presented this proposal for discussion. After review by Commission members it was decided to make minimal changes to Dr. Snoke's resolution and it will be reviewed again at our next meeting. 7. POLICY MEMORANDUM 14 REVISED INTERPRETATION OF IMPLEMENTATION - carryover item for next meeting. 8. ADJOURNMENT - 5:00 p.m. Respectfully submitted, John L. Eaton Secretary
