MINUTES VPI&SU COMMISSION ON GRADUATE STUDIES 6 DECEMBER 1989, 4:00 P.M. PRESIDENT'S BOARD ROOM Present: Drs. Bates, Burger, Campbell, C. Coruh for Dr. Snoke, Eaton, Flowers, J. Johnson, M. Johnson, R. Johnson, La Berge, Lutze, O'Brien, Stout, Mr. Daniel Adams, Ms. Theresa Fried Visitors: Mr. John Ashby 1. ANNOUNCEMENTS - Dean Eaton announced that Dean Teekell is in Richmond with the recipi- ents of the Commonwealth Fellowships. The students were to receive certificates of recognition at a luncheon. Cahit Coruh is attending todays meeting in substitution for Dr. Snoke. Dean Johnson announced that 17 GRE sites in India have had a breach of security. There will be no October test scores reported. Test scores from the January test should be available by mid April. Dean Johnson also announced that VPI&SU will be funded for seven total fellowships on the Patricia Roberts Harris Fellowship program. Dean LaBerge announced that he will be sending letters to department heads regarding the Chinese students. Chinese students will not be forced to leave this country upon completion of their degrees. Dean Eaton announced that renovations are on schedule in Sandy Hall and all offices should be moved before Spring semester begins. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 15, 1989 - The minutes were approved as submitted. 3. GRADUATE STUDENT ASSEMBLY - The GSA delegates met on 12/5/89. Mr. Adams stated that a resolution was being proposed to separate degrees on transcripts so that students could request a transcript of a spe- cific degree type. A graduate student commuter shuttle to Roanoke is also being proposed. A graduate women's support group will be headed by Pat Tracy. 4. RESOLUTION ON REDEFINITION OF ASSISTANTSHIP - the resolution was ap- proved to carry over to University Council. 5. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF THE COURSE AND PROGRAM CRITERIA COMMITTEE - Dr. Janet Johnson submitted the report and it was approved as submitted. 6. OTHER BUSINESS - Dr. Eaton discussed the distribution of the "On Being a Scientist" booklet to departments. Dr. William Flowers distributed a list of questions and concerns for the upcoming sessions of the CGS. After a brief discussion on each concern, Dr. Flowers asked that these issues be agenda items for future meetings. 7. ADJOURNMENT - 4:49 p.m. Respectfully submitted, John L. Eaton Secretary
