MINUTES VPI&SU COMMISSION ON GRADUATE STUDIES 15 FEBRUARY 1989, 4:00 P.M. PRESIDENT'S BOARD ROOM, BURRUSS HALL Present: Drs. Bates, Burger, Campbell, Cranford, Eaton, Flowers, Hooper, J. Johnson, M. Johnson, R. Johnson, LaBerge, Mahan, Snoke, Sponenberg, Stout, Swiger, Weber, Ms. Mary Bleier, Ms. Theresa Fried Visitors: Mr. John Ashby, Spectrum Dr. Jack Dudley, Sociology Department 1. ANNOUNCEMENTS - Dean John Eaton congratulated Mary Bleier, GSA representative, for hav- ing passed her preliminary examination. Theresa Fried was introduced as a new GSA representative to the Commis- sion to replace Randy Moynihan. Dr. Jack Dudley, Sociology Department, was introduced as a guest speaker. The winner of the GTA award is Susan Mayhew of the English Department. The Outstanding Service Award winner is Dana Brown of the Mechanical Engineering Department. The Cunningham winners have been selected and will be made public shortly. The date for submission of nominations for the Summer Cunningham schol- arship will be March 6, 1989. Martha Johnson described changes that the Commencement Committee is im- plementing for the upcoming commencement exercises. A copy of the process for electronic processing of course proposals was distributed for information purposes. Arthur Snoke reported that the concensus of the Faculty Senate was to agree with the extension of the deferred payment plan for qualified graduate students to include summer sessions. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 1, 1989 - The minutes were approved as submitted with minor typographical corrections. 3. GRADUATE STUDENT ASSEMBLY - Mary Bleier reported that the organiza- tional awareness kick-off meeting was a success and should anyone want buttons or stickers they can be obtained through the GSA office in Sandy Hall. 4. CUS RESOLUTION 88-89A - Dr. Jack Dudley presented clarification of the resolution content to the Commission. After discussion, Dr. Arthur Snoke moved for approval of the resolution and it was seconded and ap- proved unanimously. 5. REEXAMINATION OF CONTINUOUS ENROLLMENT POLICY - Carryover agenda item for the next meeting. 6. ADJOURNMENT - 4.38 p.m. Respectfully submitted, John L. Eaton Secretary
