MINUTES VPI&SU COMMISSION ON GRADUATE STUDIES 15 NOVEMBER 1989, 4:00 P.M. PRESIDENT'S BOARD ROOM Present: Drs. Boyle, Burger, Campbell, Conn, Eaton, Flowers, Hooper, J. Johnson, M. Johnson R. Johnson, Lutze, Moore, O'Brien, Snoke, Stephenson, Teekell Visitors: Mr. John Ashby, Ms. Theresa Fried, Mr. Greg Benge 1. ANNOUNCEMENTS - Dean Teekell stated that announcements have been sent from the Graduate School asking for nominations for the Graduate Teaching Award and the Graduate Service Award. Nominations are to be submitted to the Gradu- ate School by January 19, 1989. The GSA Travel Fund Award winners have been notified. Renovations to Sandy Hall should be completed by December 15, 1989. Questions had arisen regarding the distribution of the Faculty/Staff/ Student Telephone Directory. Dean Teekell clarified the circumstances under which graduate students would be charged for telephone books. 2. APPROVAL OF MINUTES OF NOVEMBER 1, 1989 - The minutes were approved as submitted. 3. GRADUATE STUDENT ASSEMBLY - no announcements were made. 4. REDEFINITION OF GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP - Copies were distributed of a draft of redefinitions of the terms the University is using for assistantships. The draft was prepared by Dr. Arthur Snoke and he led the discussion regarding the issues at hand. After discussion and re- vision of the draft, it was decided that the proposal would be pre- sented to the Commission at our next meeting in resolution form. 5. GRADUATE STUDENT HOUSING PROGRESS REPORT - Dr. Gary Hooper announced to the membership that a report regarding Family Housing has been pre- sented to the Provost's Office for review. The report is proposing about a 500 housing unit for Graduate Student families. 6. REVIEW OF THE MINUTES OF THE COURSE AND PROGRAM CRITERIA COMMITTEE (OC- TOBER 25, 1989) - Dr. Janet Johnson submitted the report and it was approved as submitted. 7. OTHER BUSINESS - Gregory Benge, a representative from the Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, presented a brief de- scription of the organization and it's goals. Mr. Benge then announced that Dr. Martha J. Johnson had been accepted for membership in the ODK Society. 8. ADJOURNMENT - 4:49 p.m. Respectfully submitted, John L. Eaton Secretary
