MINUTES Computer Committee Fourth Floor Burruss Hall Board Room January 10, 1990 3 PM PRESENT: Don Allison, Jeff Birch, Darrell Bosch, John Burton, John Cosgriff, David Goodyear, Tom McAnge, Harlan Miller, Dennis Catley for Jim Montgomery, Richard Sorensen, Jim Thomas, Jeff Wilcke, Mike Williams ABSENT: Jim Baranowski, Bob Heterick, Jim Hicks, Katherine Johnston, Dennis Jones, Joan McClain-Kark, Fred Medley, Ernest Stout, Barbara Young VISITOR(S): Barbara Robinson and Bill Sanders (Computing Center) Butch Nunnally, Engineering AGENDA ITEM 1: MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER 6, 1989 MEETING Motion made, seconded and passed to approve the minutes of the December meeting. AGENDA ITEM 2: COMPUTING CENTER REPORT (WILLIAMS) In order to ensure adequate MVS capacity for the recent student registration, the Center temporarily reduced the number of ini- tiators available to the public and decreased test time. This unusual step was felt to be necessary in light of the continued loading of MVS, and registration went well. The proposed upgrade to the VM systems, now being reviewed in Richmond, would solve MVS capacity problems, since a 3090 upgrade would allow the use of both sides of the 3084 for MVS instead of just one. The User Services consulting office moved to the library in De- cember, and walk-in service was unavailable for one day. User Services' new 4-HELP facility has been in place since Au- gust, allowing sufficient time to evaluate the system and the consulting statistics it produces. The facility is used to queue and track consulting questions received online (via the 4HELP command), by phone, and from those who walk into the consulting office. It appears to be encouraging users to direct their questions to consultants electronically, since as 4HELP use has grown, phone calls and visits to the consulting office have de- clined. AGENDA ITEM 3: SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS The Personal Computer subcommittee has received survey responses from most departments. They planned to meet after the full com- mittee meeting. AGENDA ITEM 4: ADDITIONS TO THE AGENDA None. Meeting adjourned at 3:22 p.m. The next meeting will be held on February 7 at 3 p.m. in Burruss 400.
