MINUTES Computer Committee Fourth Floor Conference Room Burruss Hall November 6, 1991 3 PM PRESENT: Don Allison, Erv Blythe, Jan Carr, John Cosgriff, Matthew Jackson, Bea Mahan (for Katherine Johnston), Gerry McLaughlin, Harlan Miller, Terry Rakes, K. B. Rojiani, Jay Stoeckel, Ernest Stout, J. R Webster, Michael Williams ABSENT: Jim Bishop, Darrell Bosch, John Burton, Dr. G. Wayne Clough, David Goodyear, Mary Miller, Carolyn Moore, Jeff Wilcke, Barbara Young VISITOR(S): L. A. Blankenship, Staff Senate Observer Joe Tront, College of Engineering AGENDA ITEM 1: MINUTES OF THE OCTOBER 2, 1991 MEETING Motion made, seconded and passed to approve the minutes of the October meeting. AGENDA ITEM 2: COMPUTING CENTER ANNOUNCEMENTS (WILLIAMS) Several changes have been made this fall to the University's MVS batch system relating to security and disk management. These modifications required some changes to existing user programs, but were necessary to respond to audit comments we have received. The new shield letterhead is now in production on the central mainframe printers. If you have used standard VT GML tags, no changes to your files should be necessary. Older alternative letterhead forms are no longer available. AGENDA ITEM 3: SUBCOMMITTEE REPORTS (CHAIR) o No subcommittees met this month. AGENDA ITEM 4: PROPOSAL TO FORM SUBCOMMITTEE FOR ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES AND ACADEMIC ISSUES (GOODYEAR) Discussion was deferred because of Mr. Goodyear's absence. AGENDA ITEM 5: ADDITIONS TO THE AGENDA Dr. Stout asked if there were any plans to merge the VM2 system into the VM1 system. Because the systems are different, diffi- culties are encountered in trying to make information applica- tions (specifically the XPERTISE system) available on both VM1 and VM2. Dr. Williams responded that the systems are different because the systems run on different mainframes and that the hardware on which VM2 runs is so old that the same operating sys- tem cannot be run on both. Neither system is running a current operating system. VM2 can not currently be merged into VM1 be- cause there is not sufficient capacity on VM1 to do so. Responding to Dr. Allison's query as to whether there was a de- tectable drop in the VM1 load with the increasing usage of the RS/6000 compute node, Dr. Williams said that it was too early to tell. Interest in the RS/6000 has been high. Dr. Miller, responding to the Chair, indicated that there have been no further contributions to the vision statement. Dr. Tront inquired as to whether the appropriateness of the prac- tice of lowering a student's grade if he cannot prove that he purchased a given piece of software should be added to the agenda of the PC Subcommittee. Concern was expressed. Many issues re- garding site licenses remain open (central procurement, enforce- ment and administration of licensing arrangements, commonality with library copyright issues (particularly video materials), sharing license information, etc.) and the PC Subcommittee should continue last year's investigations in this area. The next meeting will be held on December 4 at 3 p.m. in the President's Boardroom. Meeting adjourned at 3:35 p.m.
