Classified Staff Affairs Committee Meeting President's Board Room, Burruss Hall January 2, 1992 Present: J. Akers, W. Aliff, L. Barroso, J. Caldwell, C. Dudding, W. Garrison, B. Greene, T. Hergert, V. Meadows, E. Moccia, C. Price, W. Sasser, J. Smith, C. Stott, V. Viers, S. Wheeler, B. Whitlock, J. Wooge. Advisory: G. Ritter Guests/Visitors: C. Cox, R. Lovegrove. The meeting was called to order at 8:10 a.m. by L. Barroso. ANNOUNCEMENTS: Minutes from the December meeting of CSAC were approved. SUB-COMMITTEE REPORTS COMMUNICATIONS AND PUBLICITY -- J. Akers reported that: the CSAC final report will be made up of three sections - history, demographics and a challenge to the future of shared governance; because of the time limit, a written survey will not be used; because of the expense involved, the re- port will not be shared with the university community as an insert in Spec- trum. STAFF SENATE LIAISON -- W. Sasser reported that: at the Staff Senate meeting, the budget cut situation was discussed; it was indicated that the constitution and by-laws would be presented in January; names of contact people were given for those who might want to help the needy during the holidays; because of concerns with the application for the President's Board of Excellence Program, a letter would be sent to the selection panel. POLICIES & ISSUES -- No report. COUNCIL, COMMISSIONS, AND COMMITTEES -- L. Barroso reported that no meeting was held in December. The next meeting of the University Council is scheduled for January 20th. OLD BUSINESS *Staff Release Time for Governance Activities - G. Ritter of Personnel Services said that the revised memo to Deans, Directors and Department Heads should go out this month. He indicated that the memo would be changed to say that supervisors "should" allow staff associations to meet during regular work hours rather than "may" allow such meetings. He also indicated that another change equating the Staff Senate with the Faculty Senate was being considered. *Round 4 Budget Cuts: L. Barroso reported that no other information is presently available. *Linda Margheim Fund - E. Moccia reported that she received three checks and mailed them before Christmas. Other CSAC members indicated that do- nations were mailed directly to the fund. NEW BUSINESS *No new business was introduced. OTHER BUSINESS *C. Cox, a member of the Educational Aid Task Force, reported that the task force had its first meeting on December 16. Among the items reviewed were separate policies for staff and faculty, educational aid for half-time salaried staff and faculty and whether people on educational leave with partial pay can work on wages for the university during that leave. She asked that anyone with comments or suggestions contact her. *W. Sasser reported that the Common Health Wellness Program, available to all state employees should be in place by March or April. The company will provide a full-time coordinator for Virginia Tech and the membership fee will be $5.00. Examples of possible programs that may be available are stop smoking, weight loss and stress management. The meeting was adjourned at 8:31 a.m. The next meeting will be held on February 6, 1992 at 8:05 a.m. in room 400 Burruss Hall.
