MINUTES COMMISSION ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES Burruss Hall Board Room November 28, 1988 PRESENT: Dr. John M. Perry, Chairman; Dr. Dennis Hinkle, Secretary; Deans Richard Vasey for J. M. White, D. E. Egger, M. A. Ogliaruso, T. W. Bonham, M. A. Lewis, L. A. Padis, R. S. Purdy; Drs. Jack Dudley, W. E. Dugger, R. Salvaggio, Robert E. James, E. A. Brown, D. W. Dunay, M. E. Sanders, J. F. Marchman, Marjorie Norton and E. W. Carson; David Bousquet, Admissions; Wanda Dean, Registrar; Jeffrey Burkett, Teresa Abbou, and Kristen Cumberland, SGA. CALL TO ORDER AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: The meeting was called to order at 3:00 pm. Dr. Perry announced that this would be the last meeting of the Commission for the fall semester and thus would be the last meeting attended by Dean Leo Padis. Dr. Perry acknowledged the many contributions of Dean Padis and wished him well on his retirement. 2. The AGENDA was approved as distributed. 3. The MINUTES of the meeting of October 24, 1988 were approved as dis- tributed. 4. POLICY STATEMENT ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT ADMISSION - R. S. Purdy After several suggested changes were made, a motion was made and sec- onded to approve the policy statement; the final policy statement is included with these minutes. The policy statement will be sent forward to University Council for approval. 5. SUMMER ORIENTATION PROGRAMS - R. J. Nurse and E. Spencer Drs. Nurse and Spencer presented the 1988 Summer Orientation Report. The only major change in the program for 1989 will be changing the dates to the beginning of the second summer session (July 3-24, 1989). These dates will avoid overlapping with high school graduation activ- ities. In addition, since the AP scores will be available by these dates, course placement and selection processes will be enhanced. 6. UNIVERSITY FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT AND IMPACT ON CERTAIN DISABLED STUDENTS - W. E. Speer Now that the University has a comprehensive foreign language require- ment, it has become necessary to make substitutions for certain learn- ing disabled and learning impaired students. In the discussion, it was emphasized that the requirement was not being waived; rather, appropri- ate course substitutions were made. Substitutions are recommended by the EO/AA office only after professional documentation is received from a physician and/or clinical psychologist; these substitutions are given final approval by the student's college dean. 7. COURSE CRITERIA COMMITTEE REPORT - D. E. Egger SECOND READING A motion was made and seconded to approve the following courses that were submitted for first reading at the October 24, 1988 meeting. Arch 3514 Design-Related Media Art 4004 Advanced Seminar in the Visual Arts Art 4324 Advanced Problems in Visual Communications Art 4354 Advanced Problems in Painting Art 4374 Advanced Problems in Sculpture The following courses were submitted for approval: CE 2604 Analysis of Civil Engineering Problems (replaces CE 3624) CE 4164 Hazardous Waste Management (new course) CE 4474 Reinforced Concrete Structures II (new course) A motion was made and seconded to waive the first reading in approving these three courses. After this motion passed, a second motion was made and seconded to approve the above courses, and to delete the fol- lowing courses: CE 4034 Specifications CE 4214 Surveying III 8. FACULTY AUTHORED TEXTBOOKS - W. E. Dugger A motion was made and seconded for a four-year approval of the follow- ing: Krutchkoff, R. G. (1988). MINI-MANUAL. Kinkos (for STAT 4705) 9. PHILOSOPHY DEPARTMENT REQUEST FOR CORE MODIFICATION - M. A. Ogliaruso Dean Ogliaruso amended the original request from the Philosophy Depart- ment. This amended request has been approved by the Philosophy Depart- ment and the Curriculum Committee of the College of Arts and Sciences. The proposed revision is PHIL 1504 (Language and Logic) followed by EI- THER PHIL 2605 OR PHIL 2606 - both entitled Reason and Revolution in Science. A motion was made and seconded to approve this modest re- vision pending the approval by the Humanities/Fine Arts Area Committee. 10. CUS RESOLUTION 88-89 A - J. M. Perry A motion was made and seconded to approve the resolution; it will be sent forward to University Council. 11. The meeting adjourned at 4:15 pm.
