MINUTES COMMISSION ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES Burruss Hall Board Room October 24, 1988 PRESENT: Dr. John M. Perry, Chairman; Dr. Dennis Hinkle, Secretary; Deans J. M. White, D. E. Egger, M. A. Ogliaruso, L. A. Padis, Mary Ann Lewis; Drs. Charles Dudley, W. E. Dugger, R. Salvaggio, Robert E. James, Donna Dunay, E. A. Brown, Richard Steinberg, M. E. Sanders, J. F. Marchman, Marjorie Norton and E. W. Carson; Wanda Dean, Registrar; Ninette Sadusky, Jeffrey Burkett, and Kristen Cumberland, SGA ABSENT: T. W. Bonham, David Bousquet and Teresa Abbou VISITORS: Susan Trulove, Spectrum and Joyce Williams-Green 1. CALL TO ORDER AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: Dr. Perry called the meeting to order at 3:03 pm. 2. The AGENDA was approved as distributed. 3. The MINUTES of the October 10, 1988 meeting were approved as distrib- uted. 4. COURSE CRITERIA COMMITTEE REPORT - D. E. Egger SECOND READING A motion was made and seconded to approve the following courses that were submitted for first reading at the October 10, 1988 meeting. EE 3154 Electromagnetic Field Theory - new course EE 4124 Radio Wave Propagation - new course EE 4205-4206 Electronics Design - revised course EE 4304 Design in Power Engineering - revised course FIRST READING The following courses were submitted for approval: Arch 3514 Design-Related Media Art 4004 Advanced Seminar in the Visual Arts Art 4324 Advanced Problems in Visual Communications Art 4354 Advanced Problems in Painting Art 4373 Advanced Problems in Sculpture The chair of the committee indicated that the graduation checklist for the BFA in Art was returned to the Art Department for revision. However the committee approved the courses as submitted. 5. FACULTY AUTHORED TEXTBOOKS - W. E. Dugger A motion was made and seconded for a four-year approval of the follow- ing books: 1. Robinson, E. S., & Coruh, C. (1988). BASIC EXPLORATION GEOPHYSICS. John Wiley & Sons. (For Geol. 3104). Four year ap- proval. 2. Woodward, G. C., & Denton, R. E. Jr. (1988). PERSUASION AND INFLU- ENCE IN AMERICAN LIFE. Prospect Heights, IL: Waveland Press. (For Comm 4064). Four year approval. 6. POLICY ON FACULTY-AUTHORED TEXTBOOKS - C. J. Dudley The proposed resolution on faculty-authored textbooks was presented for first reading. Members of the Commission were encourage to review the resolution and suggest any revisions at the November 14, 1988, meeting. 7. SGA - DROP DATE RESOLUTION - N. Sadusky The drop date resolution was removed from consideration by the SGA rep- resentatives. Ms. Sadusky will work with Drs. Bonham and Hinkle on the wording of an additional paragraph to be included in the Faculty Hand- book relating to "faculty being encouraged to provide a significant in- dication of student academic performance before the specified drop date". 8. PROCEDURES FOR REVIEWING NEW COURSE PROPOSALS - D. E. Hinkle A motion was made and seconded to approve the procedures for reviewing new course proposals. The commission voted to approve the procedures as outlined with several minor suggestions. 9. The meeting adjourned at 4:05 pm.
