                      COMMISSION ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

 

                            Burruss Hall Board Room

                                March 27, 1989

  ABSENT:   Drs. D. E. Hinkle, D. Dunay, R. Steinberg, E. W. Carson, Jeffrey

  VISITORS: Greg Battaglia, Beth Duncan, Lydia Vergara

 

 

  1.  CALL TO ORDER AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

      The meeting was called to order at 3:05 pm.

 

  2.  The AGENDA was adopted after the following change was made:

 

      a.  The addition of the Report on Faculty Authored Textbooks - W. E.

          Dugger

 

  3.  The MINUTES of the meeting of February 13, 1989, were approved with the

      following correction:

 

      a.  MINE 3073 be changed to reflect the correct course number of 3074

          and to note that it was not a new course, but a change in credit.

 

  4.  COURSE CRITERIA COMMITTEE REPORT - D. E. Egger

 

      A motion was made, seconded and approved that the credit hours for the

      following course be increased from two to three:

 

      MINE 3074       History of Mining -- (Revised Course)

 

      Dean Egger suggested that in addition to submitting the required

      checksheet with each course submission that a cover letter be included.

      The committee has found the background information included in a cover

      letter very helpful.

 

      Questions were raised regarding the number of courses underway in the

      approval process and which of these courses would be held over the sum-

      mer. Dean Egger will confer with Dr. Hinkle to determine this informa-

      tion for those interested.

 

  5.  FACULTY AUTHORED TEXTBOOKS - W. E. Dugger

 

      A motion was made, seconded and approved to grant a four-year approval

      of the following books:

 

      Denton, R. E., Jr. and Woodward, G. C. (1985).  POLITICAL COMMUNICATION

         IN AMERICA.  Praeger, Inc.  (For COMM 3244).

 

      Stewart, C., Smith, C. and Denton, R. E., Jr. (1989) PERSUASION AND SO-

         CIAL MOVEMENTS.  Waveland Press.  (For COMM 3244).

 

  6.  STUDENT INVOLVEMENT IN FACULTY/COURSE EVALUATION - Ninette Sadusky

      Ninette Sadusky discussed the need for student involvement in the de-

      velopment of a faculty evaluation handbook.  No action was necessary on

      the part of the Commission at this time.

 

  7.  The meeting adjourned at 3:35 pm.
