  VISITORS:

  1. CALL TO ORDER AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Dr. Carlisle called the meeting to order at 3:03. In brief remarks, he

      indicated four issues that will be addressed during this academic year;

      the issues are:

      a. Liberal Education (Core Curriculum)

      b. Character and Quality of Teaching

      c. Honors Program

      d. Effectiveness of Advising

Regarding the Core Curriculum, the process will involve a review of the

logistics and the development of stated goals that potentially look be-

yond the implicit goals of the present core curriculum.

  2. The AGENDA was adopted as distributed.

  3. The MINUTES of the April 24, 1989, meeting were approved.

  4. COURSE CRITERIA COMMITTEE REPORT - M. A. Lewis

A motion was made and seconded to waive the first reading for the name

      change for the following course:

ENGR 3014 Flight in America (the name was changed from "The Tech-

                     nological Development of Aviation".

A second motion was made and seconded to approve the name change.

The following course and checklist were submitted for approval:

UAP 3415-16 Public Administration (cross listing with PSCI 3415-16

                     and MGT 3415-16).

FCD CHECKLIST adding two hours of practicum (FCD 4964) to the Child

                     Care Administration Option.

  5. FACULTY HANDBOOK - SYLLABUS AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATION - D. E. Hinkle

Based upon a memo sent by Provost John Perry to the faculty at the be-

ginning of the 1987-88 and 1988-89 academic years, a paragraph was

added to section 3.6.1 of the Faculty Handbook. (See attached) Se-

veral members of the commission indicated a need to review several

other paragraphs in this section. Therefore, a discussion of section

3.6.1 of the FACULTY HANDBOOK will be put on the agenda for the Septem-

      ber 25, 1989 meeting.

  6. RESOLUTION - RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS - W. H. Dean

A report from Institutional Research (IRPA Vol. 88-89 No. 40) was dis-

tributed. There was considerable discussion of the issue including 1)

whether a list of major religious holidays need to be developed, 2)

whether the list should be "recommended" or "suggested," and 3) whether

a list is even necessary given the fact that an appeals process is al-

ready in place. The SGA representatives agreed to help generate the

list if necessary. The item will be put back on the agenda for the

September 25, 1989 meeting for further discussion.

  7. EXAMS FOR 2 CREDIT LABORATORIES - W. H. Dean

Ms. Dean indicated that the issue is much broader than just the exam-

ination schedule for 2 credit laboratories. She asked that a small

committee be appointed. The item will be returned to the agenda pend-

ing the report of this committee.

  8. SUMMER SCHOOL CALENDAR - J. F. Williams-Green

Dr. Williams-Green presented a progress report on the data gathering

activities; these activities have involved focused-group interviews

with students, faculty and administrators. The issues being considered

are the calendar, class schedules and faculty salaries. The 1990 summer

schedule is being delayed by approximately five weeks pending the final

      report.

  9. The meeting adjourned at 4:02 pm.

                                     Respectfully submitted,

                                     Dennis Hinkle, Secretary
