                      COMMISSION ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES

  PRESENT:  Dr. E. Fred Carlisle, Chairman; Dr. Dennis Hinkle, Secretary,

                Kurstedt for J. F. Marchman, R. S. Purdy; Drs. R. E. James,

                R. Daniel, E.  Brown, R. Lamy, K. Eschenmann, D. Morris, M.

                Norton, C. J. Dudley, W. E.  Dugger, E. W. Carson, Wanda

                Dean, Registrar; David Bousquet, Admissions; W. Kuster, and

  ABSENT:   Drs. D. E. Egger, T. W. Bonham, R. Salvaggio, Brad Morris, and

                Ian Sobeiski

 

  VISITORS: Susan Trulove, Spectrum

 

 

  1.  CALL TO ORDER AND ANNOUNCEMENTS:

 

      Dr. Carlisle called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m.

 

  2.  The AGENDA was adopted as distributed.

 

  3.  The MINUTES of the November 13, 1989 meeting were approved as distrib-

      uted.

 

  4.  COURSE CRITERIA COMMITTEE REPORT - M. A. Lewis

 

      A motion was made and seconded to approve the following course:

 

      AGE 4394            Water Supply and Sanitation in Developing Countries

 

      A concern had been raised about cancelling meetings of CUS and the im-

      pact upon the course/program approval process.  The decision was made

      to hold at least one meeting per month regardless of the sparsity of

      the agenda.

 

  5.  CUS RESOLUTION 89-90 A - MIDTERM GRADES - C. J. Dudley and W. H. Dean

 

      Following a statement of support for CUS Resolution 1989-90 A from both

      the Faculty Senate and the Student Government Association, a motion was

      made and seconded to approve the resolution.  The policy will be imple-

      mented in the Fall of 1990.

 

  6.  CORE CURRICULUM - E. F. Carlisle

 

      Dr. Carlisle distributed a memo to CUS indicating his desire to approve

      "The University Forum on Liberal Education" -- a special committee to

      review and revise the Core Curriculum.  The specific charge to the Fo-

      rum will be discussed at the January 22, 1990 meeting of CUS.

 

  7.  OTHER BUSINESS

 

      Dr. Brown raised the issue regarding the use of telephone registration.

      Dr. Carlisle responded by saying that Dr. Carson and Ms.  Dean have a

      committee studying the issue.

 

  8.  The meeting was adjourned at 3:28 p.m.
