The MINUTES of the November 12, 1990 meeting were approved as cor- rected. 4. RESOLUTION 90-91 C, ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY, FIRST READING - J. F. Marchman Dr. Marchman introduced the changes suggested by the sub-committee by relating the current academic policy. He summarized the substantive changes as: 1) an increase in the flexibility for terms students may use in correcting academic deficiencies; 2) terminology for initial ac- ademic deficiency (PROBATION) and continuation of the deficiency (SUS- PENSION); 3) second academic suspension will result in a suspension of two years before request of readmission may occur; and 4) students may NOT transfer work from other institutions while on probation or suspen- sion. Dr. Marchman suggested a change in the wording in paragraph six to read, "...has been SUSPENDED OR ON ACADEMIC PROBATION..". Dr. Carlisle asked whether the rationale for this item is simply punitive. Dr. Marchman responded that the university is stating that the student is not ready to take courses at Virginia Tech and therefore should not be taking courses elsewhere. Dr. Spencer asked if use of the term PRO- BATION will be interpreted as a warning rather than action by the uni- versity. Dr. Marchman replied that the committee had labored over the semantics but strongly preferred the word probation over the current use of the terminology of "academic drop." Ms. Dean asked Dr. Sgro if there was an existing university policy that prohibits participation in extracurricular activities while on probation. Dr. Sgro responded that the policy prohibits a student's participation in these activities if the student is ineligible to enroll. 5. COURSE CRITERIA COMMITTEE REPORT - M. A.
