MINUTES COMMISSION ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES President's Board Room February 8, 1993 PRESENT: Prof. R. Daniel, Chair; Drs. T. Cobb, G. Egger, L. Geyer, B. Heath Camp, M. Lewis, M. Murray, M. CALL TO ORDER AND ANNOUNCEMENTS: Prof. Daniel called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m. He asked that members verify their electronic mail ID's and to notify the Office of the University Registrar if they are not receiving their mail. He also asked that agenda items be forwarded to himself or to Wanda Dean as soon as convenient to allow time for placement on the agenda. 2. The AGENDA was approved as distributed. 3. The MINUTES of the January 25, 1993 meeting were approved as corrected. 4. ATHLETIC COMMITTEE MINUTES - B. CASSELL Bennett Cassell, Chair of the Athletic Committee presented the minutes of the committee from September 9 and October 21, 1992. Referring to the minutes of the 9th, Marge Murray questioned what issues were confi- dential. Mr. Cassell explained that issues surrounding resource allo- cation, revenue and non-revenue sports were held in confidence until approved by the executive committee. Mike Ogliaruso asked that the number of student athletes be put into comparison year by year, this in reference to the figures reported by Jerry Via in the minutes of the 9th. The motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes. Prof. Daniel noted the commission does not need to approve, but accept the minutes as approved by the Athletic Committee. Motion was made and seconded to accept the minutes. The motion CARRIED. 5. COURSE CRITERIA COMMITEE REPORT - L. GEYER Dr. Geyer presented the February 8, 1993 report for first reading. A motion was made and seconded to approve for second reading the Janu- ary 25, 1993 report. The motion CARRIED. Courses approved Fall 1993 o BIOL 2604, General Microbiology o BIOL 2614, General Microbiology Lab o MATH 1205-1506, Calculus (revised course) o MKTG 4734, Real Estate Marketing Action on Curriculum Checklists, Options and Concentrations o FCD Minor, No new applicants accepted after Spring 1993 o Marketing Checksheet, Addition of MKTG 4704 as MKTG Elective, Effective for Graduating Class of 1993 o Real Estate Concentration, Effective Fall 1993 o Urban Affairs (UAP) Checksheets, Graduating Class of 1994 6. CLARIFICATION OF ACADEMIC PROBATION POLICY - N. SPENCER Norrine Spencer, Chair of the Academic Appeals Committee, addressed the issue of exceptions made to the Academic Probation/Suspension Policy. She stated that all colleges do not interpret the policy in the same manner and asked the commission that clarification be made on this is- sue. Dr. Spencer cited examples where the appeals policy would be in- terpreted differently under the same appeals circumstance and the outcome would either benefit or penalize the student. Elizabeth Guertin asked if it is fair to impose additional penalties on those students who do choose to appeal. Leon Geyer asked that examples of different appeals situations and outcomes be drafted for the commission to study. Norrine Spencer agreed to draft the documentation requested and return it to the commission for final clarification. 7. OTHER BUSINESS No other business was presented. 8.
