UNIVERSITY COMMITTEE ON EQUAL OPPORTUNITY/AFFIRMATIVE ACTION March 10, 1988, 10:00 A.M. Present: Barbara Board, Martha Fitzwater, Michele Holmes, Calvin Jamison, Judith Jones, Larry Lawrence, Nancy Reynolds, Lon Savage, Deborah Snead, Anne Zajac The March meeting of the University Committee on Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action was called to order by Lon Savage. Judith Jones reported confirmation of the televideoconference entitled "Racism on Campus," scheduled for March 22, 11:30 - 3:00, which will be telecast live in the rear part of the auditorium at Donaldson Brown. The program is sponsored jointly by several organizations, one of which is the American Council on Education. Some of the presenters will be Dr. Reginald Wilson, Director of the Office of Minority Concerns, Dr. Joseph Duffy, Chancellor of the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, and Dr. Estelle Allen, Illinois Board of Governors. A letter was sent to all faculty about the teleconference. It will also be advertised in Spectrum to the univer- sity community at large. If permitted, the conference will be taped for later use. Calvin Jamison said Frederick Hurst, who was a presenter at a conference in Williamsburg, provided him with a copy of his report concerning racial vi- olence on the Massachusetts campus. The report included recommendations on dealing with racial violence. There were no subcommittee reports. Ms. Jones said the state plan for desegregation has been submitted to Sec- retary of Education Finley. Copies of the plan will be mailed to each com- mittee member. Ms. Jones detailed some of the numerical objectives for the next biennium. Dr. Jamison reported that a planning committee composed of black faculty, staff, and students has been formed to provide a black student forum to talk about campus issues. A meeting of the committee will be held on March 15 at 6:15 P.M. in the Animal Science auditorium. The forum will include social, academic, and professional support programs.
