STAFF SENATE MEETING MINUTES November 21, 1991 In Attendance: 30 Senators, 4 alternates The meeting of the Staff Senate was called to order by Sherilyn McConnell, President, at 5:37 p.m. in the College Center of the College of Veterinary Medicine. The minutes were amended and approved to include the whole names of Ann Spencer and Profesor Marilyn Norstedt. Old Business: Clara Cox and Pam Orcutt spoke on revising the guidelines for release time. New material was included in the new draft, all changes we suggested were incorporated. The draft is currently in Ann Spencer's hands, the Senate will have another chance for review. The draft was read by Pam Orcutt, and all agreed it was greatly improved. Shared governance was emphasized, the responsibility of the departments to support, the ability to meet during working hours, and managers were encouraged to supply minimal resources. New Business: Deb Williams solicited our input on how the Facilities Area could be improved. DEBW VM1 if any suggestion or input. Charlie Stott reminded everyone about "Presidential Award for Excellence." Nominations are due by January 24, 1992. Budget Cuts? The floor questioned the amount of say so the staff would have. Sherri McConnell indicated there would be input. Administration seems to be searching for any input. Budget plan has to be in to Richmond by December, 2, 1991. Pam Orcutt shared a memo from President McConas urging us to have a letter supporting a tax increase ready to send to our legislators. "Be vocal so we can make a difference." Margie Murray or the VGEA will have a list of legislators. CSAC is preparing a memo to send to President McComas with their suggestions for the Round 4 Budget Cuts. The motion was made to have a special meeting of the Senate to address budget reductions as presented by CSAC. This meeting was scheduled Monday, November 25, in the College of Vet Medicine at 5:30 p.m. (see attached minutes) Richard Hayman - alternate for John Strauss addressed the public's view of the "fat" of the University. He suggested we needed more fundamental restructuring of how we do business instead of "limping" through one budget cut after another. University's long range planning could be improved. Our legislators should be held accountable as this has been predicted for some time. Committee Assignments were read by Sherri and are included in this packet. If you are not currently assigned to a committee... there's still time. Meeting was adjourned at 7:40 p.m.
