Minutes of Meeting of The Staff Senate September 19, 1991 The first meeting of the Staff Senate was called to order by Sherilyn McConnell, CoChairperson of CSAC, at 6 p.m. in the College Center of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Sheri called the roll and then introduced Ann Spencer, Associate VP of Personnel and Administration, who officially welcomed the staff senators. She charged them with carrying out their responsibilities as representatives of their associations and compared the functions of the Staff Senate to those of the Faculty Senate. Russ Cole, Coordinator in Placement Services for the University, pointed out the roles that the Staff Senate would play in the governance of the university. He specifically indicated the responsibilities of the Staff Senate in the Proposed Amendment of the University Council Constitution. Dr. Lud Eng, the past president of the Faculty Senate, then spoke to the group on his role as president of the Faculty Senate. He drew the comparison between the Faculty Senate and the Staff Senate as being similar in many ways. Dr. Eng also stressed the importance of the initiation of the Staff Senate and the significance of becoming more visible in the governance of the University. Sheri called for nominations from the floor for a Temporary Chair, Secretary and Parliamentarian to preside while the nominating committee meets and organizes a slate of officers for the coming year. The following were elected on a temporary basis: Chair Sherilyn McConnell; Secretary - Eileen Keeney; Parliamentarian - Linda Haney. The following people were nominated to be on the Nominating Committee to compile a slate of candidates for office. The following were selected: Clara Cox, Margie Murray, Peggy Rasnick, Diane Patty, Spencer Foster, Doug Jones, and Fred Phillips. After much discussion, it was voted upon and approved that future meetings will be the third Thursday of each month, beginning at 6:00 p.m. The location of the next meeting will be selected by the Temporary Chair and the Senators will be notified. Sheri requested that each person attending fill in the last sheet of the packet and leave on the table. It will be used to make any changes or corrections to the roster. Pam mentioned that Dr. John Hillison, the President of the Faculty Senate, is extremely supportive of the Staff Senate and would like to see some articles rom the Staff Senate appear in the SPECTRUM. He would also be in favor of co-hosting a Fall Forum on Employee Benefits. It was requested that a flow chart showing the different associations that make up the Colleges be distributed to the Senators at the earliest convenience. Because some of the associations were not formed in the same manner, it may take some time to get this information. A motion was made to adjourn. Adjourned at 7:30 p.m.
