UNIVERSITY LIBRARY COMMITTEE MINUTES September 16, 1992 PRESENT: Meighan Belsley, SGA Gerald Luttrell, Engineering Carol Burch-Brown, Provost's Off. Ken McCleary, Human Resources Norm Dodl, Education Martha Rose, CSAC Joanne Eustis, Library Mark Smith, Veterinary Medicine Jeff Fithian, GSA James Yardley, Business Edward Fox, Arts & Sciences Rodney Young, Ag. & Life Sciences GUESTS: Dave Beagle, Library Frances Painter, Library Buddy Litchfield, Library Francis Riggins, Library ABSENT: Darrell Clowes, Faculty Senate J. Scott Poole, Architecture MEETING SUMMARY: The meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. The April minutes were approved as submitted. Meeting times were agreed to for the first semester and there was a demonstration of the VTLS 1992 release. NEW BUSINESS COMMITTEE MEETING TIME FOR FALL SEMESTER (N. Dodl): It was agreed to meet on the third Wednesday of each month. The October meeting will begin at 3:30 p.m., and the November and December meetings will begin at 3:00 p.m. VICE PRESIDENT FOR INFORMATION SYSTEMS SEARCH (N. Dodl): Dr. Carlisle held a meeting in late August for members of ULC, the Computer Committee, and the Communications Committee to discuss the search for Vice President for Information Systems. He discussed the search process, shared a draft of the position description, and requested feedback. A search committee of faculty and administrators will be appointed and it has been decided not to use a search firm. From the discussion it appears that it will probably be next fall before a new Vice President for Information Systems is in place. LIBRARY REPORT (J. Eustis): J. Eustis distributed the library's goals document for this academic year which was prepared during the summer. It will be discussed and a progress report given at the next meeting. One of the most interesting problems facing the library is service for distance learning. In addition to the various colleges' programs within the state, the university has established a center in Lugano, Switzerland, there is the architecture branch in Alexandria, the Equine Medical Center in Leesburg, and the Northern Virginia Graduate Center. The question of library services for distance learning needs to be an early agenda item for the committee. Last spring the library informed the committee about the decision to fine all library patrons for unreturned recalled books. In order to do this the library needed VTLS to make a software change. The fix has been tested twice but did not work, so the library was unable to institute the policy at the beginning of fall semester. VTLS is continuing to work on the problem and the library hopes to be able to begin fining in January. The library received $1,250,000 as an addition to the materials budget. DEMONSTRATION OF THE VTLS 1992 RELEASE The committee proceeded to the library classroom for a demonstration of the VTLS 1992 release. The new release will be loaded during the December break and is scheduled to be available by the beginning of the second semester. The meeting was adjourned at the end of the demonstration. The next meeting will be at 3:30 p.m. on October 21.
