Brown Family (John Howe Brown Collection)
Papers, 1825-1912, 1965, n.d., 0.6 cu. ft., Ms90-011
Introduction
The John Howe Brown Collection of the Brown family papers consists of the papers of James Cartmill Brown (1828-1913), a landowner of a farm on the north fork of the Roanoke River in Montgomery County, Virginia. The materials consist of receipts, bills, promisory notes, tax notes, letters, and other various papers created between 1825 and 1912, with the bulk of the collection from 1850 to 1894, by members of the Brown family, as they purchased services and goods from business people in their community. The collection includes receipts from the services of Dr. Harvey Black of Blacksburg, and genealogical material of the Brown lineage, created by Frances Parker Brown in 1965. This inventory gives an item by item listing of the materials.
Provenance
The Brown family (John Howe Brown Collection) was donated to the University Libraries by Mrs. Frances Brown of Blacksburg, Virginia, in 1990; a small addition was made in 1994. Processing of the collection was completed in May 1998 by Gina Ellis, student assistant, and Laura Katz Smith, Manuscripts Curator, Special Collections Department.
