Provenance: The Hiram Matthew Papers were purchased from Howard McManus, a dealer in Roanoke, Virginia in 1988.

Processing History: The original letters have been copied and laminated. The Hiram Matthew collection was desribed and arranged in 2002.

Biographical Note

Hiram Matthew was a union soldier from Campbellsburg in Washington County Indiana. He was a member of the 66th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of twenty-two letters of outgoing correspondence from Union soldier Hiram Matthew to his wife Elmira Matthew of Campbellsburg Washington County Indiana. The correspondence includes descriptions of a soldier's life including, but not limited to, health aliments suffered during the war; punishments suffered for crimes committed during war and battle accounts, including accounts of the Siege of Atlanta. Eleven letters between the dates of February 1, 1863 and June 27, 1863 were written from Corinth, Mississippi. Eight letters were written between November 24, 1864 and March 15, 1864 from Pulaski, Tennessee. Last letter is dated April 28, 1865 from Raleigh, North Carolina and the war has ended.
