Born March 8, 1800, in Fayette County, Kentucky; died December 27, 1871, in Danville, Kentucky.

Carrington, Eliza Henry Preston --

Born August 11, 1796, in Washington County, Virginia; died January 11, 1877, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Daughter of Francis and Sarah Buchanan Campbell Preston. Married Edward C. Carrington (1790-1855) on May 16, 1820.

Hampton, Wade --

Born March 28, 1818, in Charleston, South Carolina; died April 11, 1902, in Columbia, South Carolina. Member of the South Carolina legislature and state senate, 1852-61. Commanded the cavalry of the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War. Governor of South Carolina, 1876-79, and U.S. Senator, 1879-91.

Born January 13, 1818, in Abingdon, Virginia; died June 27, 1852, in Columbia, South Carolina. Married Wade Hampton on October 10, 1838.

Born on Sept. 30, 1770, in Caswell County, North Carolina; died February 7, 1844 in Woodford County, Kentucky.

Hart, Susanna Preston --

Born on October 7, 1772, at Greenfield, in Botetourt County, Virginia; died on June 21, 1833, in Spring Hill, Woodford County, Kentucky. Daughter of William and Susanna Smith Preston; married Nathaniel Hart on August 26, 1797, in Montgomery County, Virginia.

Born on September 29, 1776, at Smithfield in Montgomery County, Virginia; died February 4, 1824, near Sweet Springs, West Virginia. Daughter of William and Susanna Smith Preston; married John Lewis on November 8, 1793.

McDowell, James --

Born August 1, 1770, in Rockbridge County, Virginia; died September 15, 1835. Representative in the Virginia House of Delegates; rose to rank of lieutenant colonel in the Virginia Militia.

McDowell, James --

Born October 13, 1795, in Rockbridge County, Virginia; died August 24, 1851, near Lexington, Virginia. Son of James and Sarah Preston McDowell; married his cousin Susanna Smith Preston on September 7, 1818. A founder of the Virginia Historical Society; Governor of Virginia, 1843-46; U.S. Congressman, 1846-51.

Died April 21, 1895. Daughter of James McDowell (1795-1851) and Susanna Smith Preston McDowell (1800-47).

Born on May 3, 1767, at Greenfield in Botetourt County, Virginia; died on July 3, 1841. Daughter of William and Susanna Smith Preston; married to James McDowell in February 1792.

McDowell, Susanna Smith Preston --

Born March 5, 1800, in Washington County, Virginia; died October 13, 1847. Daughter of Francis and Sarah Buchanan Campbell Preston; married her cousin James McDowell (1795-1851), son of James and Sarah Preston McDowell, on September 7, 1818.

Madison, Elizabeth [Eliza] Preston --

Born on May 31, 1762, in Augusta County, Virginia; died February 4, 1837, in Montgomery County, Virginia. Daughter of William and Susanna Smith Preston. Married William Strother Madison (d. 1782) on January 14, 1779.

Peyton, Susanna Smith Madison --

Born October 13, 1780, at Smithfield in Montgomery County, Virginia; died July 15, 1820, in Staunton, Virginia. Daughter of William Strother and Elizabeth Preston Madison; married John Howe Peyton on July 11, 1802.

Preston, Francis --

Born on Aug. 2, 1765, at Greenfield in Botetourt County, Virginia; died at the home of his son William Campbell Preston in Columbia, South Carolina, on May 26, 1835. Son of William and Susanna Smith Preston; married Sarah Buchanan Campbell on January 10, 1793.

Preston, Isaac Trimble --

Born in 1793 in Rockbridge County, Virginia; died on July 6, 1852. Settled in New Orleans; Attorney General of Louisiana, 1824-29, 1843-46. Son of Francis Preston.

Preston, James Patton --

Born on June 21, 1774, at Smithfield in Montgomery County, Virginia; died there May 4, 1843. Son of William and Susanna Smith Preston; married Ann Barraud Taylor (1778-1861) on June 23, 1801. Trustee of the town of Blacksburg, Virginia, in 1798. Governor of Virginia, 1816-19.

Preston, John --

Born May 2, 1764, at Greenfield in Botetourt County, Virginia; died there March 27, 1827. Son of William and Susanna Smith Preston. Married first Mary Radford (d. 1810) on June 11, 1798; married second Eliza Ann Carrington Mayo (1768-1839) on March 30, 1811. Member of the Virginia House of Delegates for Botetourt County in 1783; justice of the peace and surveyor of Montgomery County. Rose through the ranks of the Virginia Militia to Major General.

Preston, John Smith --

Born April 20, 1809, in Saltworks, Washington County, Virginia; died May 1, 1881, in Columbia, South Carolina. Son of Francis and Sarah Buchanan Campbell Preston; married Caroline Hampton (1807-83) on April 28, 1830. Member of the South Carolina Senate (1854-58). Rose to rank of Brigadier General during the Civil War.

Preston, John Thomas Lewis --

Born on April 25, 1811, in Lexington, Virginia; died there on July 15, 1890. Son of Thomas Lewis and Edmonia Madison Preston. Helped establish the Virginia Military Institute and a member of its faculty. Rose to the rank of colonel during the Civil War.

Preston, Sarah (Sally) Buchanan Campbell --

Born April 22, 1778, in Smyth County, Virginia; died July 23, 1846, in Abingdon, Virginia. Married Francis Preston on January 10, 1793.

Preston, Thomas Lewis --

Born August 19, 1781, at Smithfield in Montgomery County, Virginia; died August 11, 1812, in Lexington, Virginia. Son of William and Susanna Smith Preston; married Edmonia Madison Randolph on June 12, 1806. Served in the Virginia House of Delegates from Rockbridge County from 1806 to 1811.

Preston, William --

Born September 5, 1770, at Greenfield in Botetourt County, Virginia; died January 24, 1821, in Montgomery County, Virginia. Son of William and Susanna Smith Preston; married Caroline Hancock (1785-1847) on March 28, 1802. Rose through ranks of Virginia Militia until he moved to Kentucky in 1814 to settle lands inherited from his father, in what is now Louisville.

Preston, William Ballard --

Born in November 29, 1805, at Smithfield, Montgomery County, Virginia; died at Smithfield on November 16, 1862. Son of James Patton and Ann Barraud Taylor Preston; married Lucinda Staples Redd on November 21, 1839. Prosecuting attorney in Montgomery County, Virginia; member of the Virginia General Assembly (1830-32), Virginia state Senate (1840-44), and the Virginia House of Delegates (1844-45). Secretary of the Navy (1849-50). Member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention in 1861 as an opponent to secession. Senator in the Confederate Congress from July 1861 until his death in November 1862.

Preston, William Campbell --

Born on December 27, 1794, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; died on May 22, 1860, in Columbia, South Carolina. Son of Francis and Sarah Buchanan Campbell Preston.
