Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, about 38 miles southwest of Roanoke. Special Collections is located on campus, within the Carol M. Newman Library.
Directions
From Interstate 81, take Exit 118 to reach the three exit ramps (A-B-C) for all three of the exits at this location. There is only one exit ramp serving the exits; missing the ramp means a trip north to Exit 128 or south to Exit 114 to turn around. Take Exit 118B onto U.S. 460 West. This exit connects directly to the Christiansburg Bypass. Follow the signs for Blacksburg/Virginia Tech. The U.S. 460 bypass between Blacksburg and Christiansburg is a limited-access highway from I-81 to the campus entrance at Southgate Drive.
A large campus map is located near the 314 East (also called Southgate Drive) entrance, and an Information/Visitors Center is on the right a quarter of a mile farther down the road. The center issues free visitor parking passes. (You will need a parking permit to park on campus.)
Take Southgate and turn left at Duck Pond Drive. Turn right onto Washington Street. Turn left onto Otey Street. Park in the visitor's parking section of the large parking lot on Otey across from the The Center for Graduate Study (formerly Donaldson Brown Hotel and Conference Center.) Lodging is available on campus at The Inn at Virginia Tech.
The Special Collections is located in Newman Library, which is next to Squires Student Center and across from the bookstore. The Special Collections is the glassed-in area on the first floor on the right as one enters the building.
Special Collections is open to the public Monday through Friday. See our current hours.
If you are planning a trip to the Special Collections please call in advance in case the materials you wish to look at are stored offsite. This will also allow the staff of the department to prepare for your visit.
