The virtual exhibit of The Lyric Theatre: A Look Back at the Beginnings was mounted on the World Wide Web on January 15, 1996, the same date that the physical exhibition by the same name opened in the Wallace Hall Gallery at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg. The physical and electronic exhibits were co-curated by Eric Wiedegreen, associate professor in the Department of Housing, Interior Design, and Resource Management of the College of Human Resources, and Tamara Kennelly, University Archivist, Special Collections Department of the University Libraries.
While the gallery exhibit was on display only for a brief period, the electronic exhibit will be continuously available to both local users and visitors from the entire world. The exhibits mirror each other to a certain extent, but each of the exhibits contains materials not included in the other format. Because of limitations of space and technology, the construction drawings in the electronic version had to be reduced in size so that they do not represent the clarity and precision of the actual versions. When the gallery display is taken down, materials may be viewed at Special Collections in Newman Library. The drawings in the exhibit represent a small portion of the sketches, construction plans, and blueprints for the Lyric in the Smithey & Boynton Collection.
