Guide to the Historical Map Collection
This guide lists and describes United States maps in the Special Collections at University Libraries, Virginia Tech. Many of the maps listed here date from the nineteenth century and earlier. Many are rare, and in the case of manuscript maps, some are unique. High-quality reproductions of rare maps and bird's-eye views of cities are also included.
In terms of format, three types of maps are included in this guide. Maps published separately and stored flat are indicated by a folder number. Maps published in cases designed to store them are indicated by a box number. Maps published as separate folding plates in books are indicated by the call number of the book in which they appear. (Some railroad maps appear in uncataloged annual reports in archival collections, and are described as such.)
Much of the collection relates to Virginia. Some of the Virginia maps will be found under: EASTERN UNITED STATES, RAILROAD MAPS, and CIVIL WAR MAPS. Most of the Virginia maps, however, will be found in the following sections: VIRGINIA (covering the state as a whole or regions other than Southwest Virginia); VIRGINIA COUNTIES (excluding Southwest Virginia counties); VIRGINIA CITIES AND TOWNS (again excluding those in Southwest Virginia); SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA (excluding Montgomery County and the independent city of Radford); MONTGOMERY COUNTY, BLACKSBURG, CHRISTIANSBURG, AND RADFORD; and VIRGINIA TECH CAMPUS MAPS. For a precise definition of the area covered by Southwest Virginia, see the scope note at the beginning of that section. Users should remember that maps of an area will also be parts of the maps of the larger areas that include them -- maps of Southwest Virginia, for example, will be included in maps of Virginia as a whole.
