VIVA Special Collections Committee
Minutes

April 4, 1997

Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA

Present: Ned Berkeley, Gail McMillan, Joyce Ogburn, and Betsy Pittman (chair).

  1. Briefly discussed the web site "Internet Library for Librarians" which offered a policy page.

  2. Progress reports and budget concerns discussed. Of particular concern: fate of unexpended portion(s) of budget; allocation for FY 97-98; ODU portion. Uncertainty as to the intentions of the Steering Committee in this and several other areas prompted the committee to request that another liaison to S.C. be appointed. Betsy will also contact Kathy Perry in regard to the upcoming retreat.

  3. Betsy mentioned that she had asked Paul if he would be interested in hosting the next meeting. Scheduling was discussed but is dependent upon the scope of the planned retreat in May.

  4. Electronic Theses and Dissertations--Gail provided an indepth presentation on Tech's several years experience with this project covering all aspects (working with the graduate school, submission, cataloging and releases). Handouts are available.

  5. ArchivesUSA--Gail distributed the address for trial access to the database for the committee members to test. Evaulation forms are available at http://exlibris.uls.vcu.edu/viva/tech/vivaqs.html Access is available at http:///archives.chadwyck.com/ Please fax your evaluations to Betsy by 4/16 (804) 828-1108.

    Respectfully submitted,

    Betsy Pittman, Chair
