OPEN DISCUSSION

• VIVA Funding for Special Collections
  Elsie clarified that the VIVA Steering Committee may have funding for the Special Collections Committee in the next biennium particularly for matching funds should funds be needed for a successful grant application and award.

• Grant writer
  The Committee agreed that it would be wise to hire someone to apply for grants to support the continued development of digitizing and access of the unique resources available from the VIVA Special Collections. The idea of a union list of special collections in Virginia that have materials available online for a history of Virginia received favorable support. A subcommittee was formed including: Gaynor, Kneebone, Ogburn, and Weatherington. They will draft a plan for use as the basis of a future grant application before the next committee meeting of the whole.

• Timeline Project
  Gail will proceed with this Web page, linking historical resources available from VIVA special collections. The timeline will include past, present, and future (we are hopeful) VIVA funded projects, as she receives them from the participating institutions. (She will maintain this site with current VIVA funds.) The timeline may be a predecessor to the Virginia union list above, but it may be a useful resource in the meantime.

• ArchivesUSA
  At the request of Susanna Pathak, VIVA Collections Committee, the Committee will review ArchivesUSA and make a recommendation about its purchase since it now has a reduced consortium price. The Committee reviewed the product in April 1997 and did not recommend purchasing it at that time.
