Guests from the Library of Virginia attended the meeting and were introduced to Committee members.
Grant Writer
Major discussion centered on the roles of the grant writer and Committee members in developing grants for solicitation. The grant writer will serve as advisor to the Special Collections Committee (SCC), ensure that submissions meet solicitation guidelines, research potential granting agencies, assist in writing final submission. The SCC members will conduct survey of collections at public institutions; collect other data needed to support grant solicitation, analyze data, and publicize the Virginia Heritage Collections project.
Potential Granting Sources
Ameritech Due: November 2, 1998 Grant is content driven; about $150,000 for a consortium. Agency will accept partnering of 2-3 schools with a makeup of an ARL and comprehensives. No equipment support; focused, narrow scope.
NEH Due: July 1, 1999
Mellon Due: Open
NSF One page abstract February 15, 1999, full proposal due May 17, 1999
IMLS (Institute for Museum and Library Services)
The SCC decided to pursue a grant that will support a consortial effort. Agencies that will be pursued are Mellon, NEH, and IMLS.

Each subcommittee will give a progress report at the next meeting. The first work shop will also be held at the next meeting. The workshop will focus on Encoded Archival Description (EAD) and other technical aspects of creating finding aids.
The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for September 23 , 1998 at UVA, 10:30 am.
