Phillips, William Hewitt (1918- )
Aerospace engineer. Received a B.S. degree in aerospace engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1939) and an M.S. in aerospace engineering from M.I.T. (1940). Joined the National Advisory Committee for Aviation (NACA) as a junior engineer in 1940. Head of the Stability and Control Section, Flight Research Division (1943-1959); Guidance and Control Branch, Flight Research Division (1959-1962). Chief, Space Mechanics Division (1963-1970), Flight Dynamics and Control Division (1970-1979), and a Distinguished Research Associate at NASA Langley Research Center, retiring from NASA in 1979. Author of (Journey in Aeronautical Research: a Career at NASA Langley Research Center. Among his awards are the President's Awared for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service (1979) and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal (1979).
