Phillips, William Hewitt (1918- )

Aerospace engineer. Received a B.S. degree in aerospace engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1939) and an M.S. in aerospace engineering from M.I.T. (1940). Joined the National Advisory Committee for Aviation (NACA) as a junior engineer in 1940. Head of the Stability and Control Section, Flight Research Division (1943-1959); Guidance and Control Branch, Flight Research Division (1959-1962). Chief, Space Mechanics Division (1963-1970), Flight Dynamics and Control Division (1970-1979), and a Distinguished Research Associate at NASA Langley Research Center, retiring from NASA in 1979. Author of (Journey in Aeronautical Research: a Career at NASA Langley Research Center. Among his awards are the President's Awared for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service (1979) and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal (1979). Papers include Phillips' autobiography, as well as lecture notes, reports, and memoranda, tracing the development of Phillips' theories while at Langley, spanning from his work on World War II-era aircraft to the early U. S. space program and beyond.
