Thornton, Earl A. (1936-)
Aerospace engineer, author, and specialist in thermal structures. Received BS (1959, mechanical engineering) and Ph D (1968, mechanical engineering) from Virginia Tech and a MS in theoretical and applied mechanics from the University of Illinois. Filled tenured positions in Aerospace Engineering at Old Dominion University (1969-1986) and the University of Virginia (1989-1999) where he was named Professor Emeritus in May of 1999. Associate Editor of the Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets and Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). Author of books on thermal structures and the finite element method. Collection includes research files, personal notes, audio recordings, videocassettes, photographs, and publications on the field of aeronautics.
