Note: The University that is known today as Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University has been known by four different legal names since its first session began on October 1, 1872. The founding name was Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. The name was changed by the legislature to Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute effective March 5, 1896. The legal name was changed to Virginia Polytechnic Institute effective June 23, 1944. The present legal name, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, became effective on June 26, 1970. The University has been popularly known as VPI or Virginia Tech since the 1896 name change.
