In Memoriam - Jane Marshall Ewing
By Caryl Gray
The Culinary History Advisory Board lost one of its charter members on August 3, 2002. Jane Ewing was one of the enthusiastic women who supported the growth of the Peacock-Harper Culinary Collection at Virginia Tech. Previously she had a long career as a home economist and served Roanoke County as an Extension Agent for the Virginia Tech Extension Service. She retired from this position in 1980.
I had the privilege of knowing Jane for a short time, but I looked forward to each opportunity to visit with her during Culinary History Advisory Board meetings. She always had a warm smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. She had a genuine concern for people and wonderful stories to tell. I remember sitting next to her at several meetings and feeling as though I was sitting next to my grandmother. Jane was truly a Southern lady and we will miss her warmth and generous spirit.
The family has established the Jane M. and Edwin J. Ewing Study Abroad Scholarship Fund through the Communications Studies Department at Virginia Tech. Contributions may be made to the Virginia Tech Foundations, Account # 883639, 121 Pack Building, Blacksburg, VA 24061.
[An obituary appeared in the Roanoke Times on Aug. 5, 2002.]
