Bladensburg Oct. 23 1861
My dear Brother
We are off at last, just my luck, if they had only put this off a week I should have
seen a lot of my friends. However military is but obedience. It is now 12 at night, three
hours ago we received orders, and in four hours we start, bag, baggage + tents. If I am
not much mistaken for, Port Tobacco, we don't go by rail, nor do we go thro' Wash.
therefore I conclude P.T. and Acquir Creek - I am greatly disappointed at not seeing you,
but it can't be helped. An hour or so ago I received orders, assigning me to the command
of Co. C. (True Blues). I shall have hard work as I have no

I have no Lieut. I can have the Captaincy of the company if I want it, but have not as yet
decided that I want it. I want a staff appointment rather than a Captaincy. Don't say
anything about the Captaincy. Write as usual, letters will all be sent over. Love to Mother
