April 15, 1795 -- letter from J. Preston at Smithfield to James McDowell
Smithfield April 15th 1795
Dear Sir,
I returned home last evening from a long and disagreeable tour in Russell in quest of the object I mentioned to you I had in view when last at your house - I beleive I have attained & it will prove advantageous- As you are intrusted I wish you to be up with your warrant as soon as profitible least someother may slip in. it is only known to two other persons, they are absent and will return shortly which may be unfavourable to us - therefore hasten- I want one more fact to be a certaind which when discovered will make me certain one way or other- This I beleive youll have to do- I am worried down almost, and as you have not been much fatigued lately you can attack with vigor- I am realy happy & most sincerely congratulating you on your election which was honorable & I am the more rejoiced as you out polled two old santified wretches who wish every one to think they are deities & want the appearance of religion to give them importance- but more on this when we meet- Give my love to your family and wife

In the contract you
mention that was made
in Philidelphia was a
bad one & you nor I was neither contemplated in it. We must therefore go on our own bottoms- it is best so well then make greater epercious(?) I thought it would turn out so I believe I mentiond it to you.
